If the Clausura 2026 season has proven anything so far, it’s that the Liga MX title race is far from predictable. Eleven rounds into the tournament, Cruz Azul remains at the top of the standings, but the margin is thin and several teams are within striking distance as the league moves toward the decisive stretch of the regular season.

Cruz Azul extended its run as league leader after earning a draw against Pumas at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. It wasn’t the most convincing performance from La Máquina, but it was enough to keep them at the top for a fourth straight week. With 26 points, Cruz Azul sits one point ahead of Toluca and just two ahead of Guadalajara.

Pumas vs. Cruz Azul Summary

The match in Ciudad Universitaria offered plenty to talk about. Cruz Azul looked like the stronger side early on, controlling much of the match, but the same issue that has followed them throughout the season appeared again: the team tends to lose intensity in the second half. Pumas took advantage, fighting back with energy and pride to secure the draw.

That is something head coach Nicolás Larcamón will likely need to address quickly. A drop in rhythm might not cost much during the regular season, but in a knockout playoff series it could prove decisive.

Pumas, meanwhile, showed once again that they are capable of competing with the league’s top clubs, even if they still seem slightly behind the main title contenders. The match also featured its share of controversy, including a debated penalty decision and the sending-off of defender Nathan Silva. Still, even while playing with ten men, Pumas managed to stay organized and earn a result.

The reaction on the sidelines also grabbed attention. Head coach Efraín Juárez showed visible frustration during the match, something that has already become part of his animated style on the touchline. But emotional reactions are hardly unusual in Mexican soccer, especially during a heated game in front of a packed stadium.

Another moment that caught the attention of fans came from Cruz Azul midfielder Carlos “Charly” Rodríguez, whose interaction with the home crowd sparked criticism from some observers. While celebrating with supporters is normal, provoking an opposing crowd can easily escalate tensions in a league where fan atmospheres are already intense.

Despite the drama, the game delivered what Liga MX fans love most: energy, controversy, and entertainment.

Toluca vs. Atlas Summary

While Cruz Azul kept the top spot, Toluca missed a chance to overtake them. The reigning champions played to a draw against Atlas, a result that kept them second with 25 points. Head coach Antonio “Turco” Mohamed rotated several players in the starting lineup, likely with one eye on the busy schedule ahead. Toluca will host San Diego FC in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 later this week, where they trail 3-2 on aggregate.

Atlas, however, deserves credit. The Guadalajara club has quietly put together a solid campaign, even if it hasn’t received as much attention as some of the bigger teams. By competing well against Toluca, Atlas continued to show it can challenge anyone in the league and currently sits eighth with 17 points.

Chivas Sitting Pretty

Just behind the leaders sits Guadalajara, which might be in the best position of all. Chivas currently has 24 points but also holds a game in hand. After their convincing 3-0 win over Santos Laguna, the Rebaño Sagrado could take over the top of the table if they win their pending match against León.

For Guadalajara, finishing near the top of the standings is particularly important. A top-two finish guarantees home-field advantage in the second leg of playoff series and the tiebreaker benefit if the aggregate score ends level.

Other Results

Elsewhere in the standings, Monterrey endured another frustrating weekend. Rayados appeared on track for a win after taking a two-goal lead against FC Juárez, but the match slipped away and ended in a draw. The dropped points leave Monterrey in ninth place with 14 points, currently outside the playoff positions and three points behind eighth-place Atlas.

Tigres also missed an opportunity to move up the table. Playing at home at the Estadio Universitario, the team managed only a scoreless draw against Querétaro. The result left Tigres sixth with 17 points and drew loud boos from the home crowd at the final whistle.

América, on the other hand, continues to gather momentum. Las Águilas defeated Mazatlán 2-0 to climb into the playoff positions ahead of a midweek Concacaf Champions Cup clash against the Philadelphia Union. André Jardine’s team now sits seventh with 17 points and appears to be finding rhythm after an inconsistent start to the season.

Individual Excellence

Individually, several players have also made headlines.

Chivas striker Armando “Hormiga” González is enjoying a remarkable run. By scoring in four consecutive home matches, he became only the fourth player in club history to score in the first four home games of a season, joining names like Omar Bravo and Luis Reyes. González is also just the third Guadalajara player to produce multiple streaks of four or more home goals in separate tournaments.

Tijuana midfielder Kevin Castañeda also reached a milestone. His brace against León brought his Liga MX total to 27 goals, surpassing former Xolos striker Darío Benedetto to become the fourth-highest scorer in club history. The second of those goals also happened to be the 250th goal scored in the Clausura 2026 tournament.

Cruz Azul striker Nicolás Ibáñez also reached an impressive milestone, scoring his 90th career goal in Mexican soccer, while Atlético de San Luis forward João Pedro continues making history with the club as the first player to score at least ten goals in consecutive tournaments.
