Why Do Arsenal Want Vinícius Jr.?
Arsenal have been looking to strengthen their left wing this summer, and Vinicius is one of several candidates Mikel Arteta is exploring. With the departure of Leandro Trossard and the inconsistency of Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal have decided to enter the transfer market as they continue building a Premier League title-defending team. Having already signed Christos Tzolis but missing out on their preferred left-wing target in Morgan Rogers, sources report attention has now turned to Vinicius Jr to Arsenal as the club’s marquee signing of the summer.
Arsenal are no strangers to marquee signings, having brought in names like Viktor Gyökeres, Eberechi Eze, and Declan Rice in recent seasons. Vinícius Jr. would fit right into the London club, reuniting with compatriot Gabriel, who leads Arsenal’s defense.
Vinícius Jr and Real Madrid: An Unhappy Marriage?
There was a time when Vinícius Jr. was the star of this Real Madrid team. After the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and the failed stint of Eden Hazard, Real Madrid needed a poster boy who could deliver high-impact performances. Enter Vinícius Jr., who became a talisman for Los Blancos, converting his doubters into fans after working year after year to establish himself as one of the best players in the world.
Despite leading the team to two Champions League titles and having a Ballon d’Or runner up finish to his name, Vinícius has slowly started to feel isolated in the Spanish capital. After the arrival of Kylian Mbappé in the summer of 2024, Vinícius and Real Madrid have won a grand total of zero major trophies. Since both players’ stardom and positions on the field have started to overlap, it became an open secret that one of them would eventually have to be sacrificed if the team wanted to regain its spark.
Who would Madrid choose? The greatest FIFA World Cup player of the modern generation, who breaks records even in his worst seasons and who idolized Real Madrid as a child? Or the Brazilian kid who slowly grew into his own, learning and improving every year but often being the cause of derailing the club’s momentum (El Clásico and Xabi Alonso spat last year comes to mind) and who gets involved in unnecessary controversies?
Will Real Madrid Sell Vinícius Jr to Arsenal?
Yes, most likely. The 15-time European Champions have attempted contract renewal talks with the Brazilian’s camp for months now, reaching no positive resolution. With the Kylian Mbappé situation and a lack of trophies for two seasons in a row now, Vini could very well be heading for the exit door.
Real Madrid have also reportedly opened talks for Yan Diomande, who would become yet another right-footed winger in the squad if signed. RB Leipzig reportedly rejected Real Madrid’s first bid worth nearly $114 million, but the fact that José Mourinho is already pushing for that winger suggests Vinícius probably knows his position is in jeopardy.
Los Blancos also won’t want to let Vinícius leave for free. His contract expires in exactly 12 months, and if it isn’t renewed, he can officially begin negotiating with Arsenal (or any other club) this January over a free transfer. Real Madrid would not want to lose a superstar whose current market value is around $160 million without receiving a transfer fee.
What Would Vinícius Jr to Arsenal Look Like?
If the 26-year-old winger decides to move to the Premier League, he would almost certainly lead Arsenal’s charge for back-to-back Premier League titles. He has scored 20+ goals in each of his last five seasons and has built a reputation as a European specialist. Along with scoring two Champions League final goals, Vinícius has scored 34 goals in the competition, eight more than the highest Champions League goalscorer currently in Arsenal’s squad.
That level of continental experience would be invaluable for a team that has steadily climbed toward the top of European soccer in recent seasons, culminating in a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat in last season’s Champions League final.
Vinícius Jr to Arsenal would also mean he finally gets to play alongside an out-and-out center forward in Viktor Gyökeres. The Swede is a classic No. 9 who won’t drift into Vinícius’ preferred spaces like Mbappé often does. The former Sporting man is also very good at headed finishes which Vini’s loopy crosses would love.
But as Ornstein reports, the deal is still in its early stages and may or may not develop into an actual transfer.
