The regular season hits its apex on tomorrow when the NWSL Decision Day delivers eight simultaneous matches. Although seven clubs have already qualified for the playoffs, the final berth remains undecided. There is the small matter of who will win the NWSL Shield, the trophy for best league record, and several other teams are fighting for better seeding and home field advantage in the quarterfinals.
1. Gotham FC vs. Utah Royals
Gotham comes into this match with one simple objective: get a point. They’ve already locked in their top-four finish, and the resulting home-field advantage. So right now, they’re playing for The Shield. It’s a trophy the club has never won, even though they’ve won the NWSL championship twice in the past three years. It would be sweeter than Halloween candy for them to accomplish this feat. Currently on 58 points, three above San Diego Wave, all they need is a win or draw. Utah technically has a longshot chance to sneak into the fourth spot, but they would need two unlikely things to happen. One, they’d have to beat Gotham by a LOT. Two, Kansas City would have to lose to Racing Louisville by a LOT to erase the negative six goal differential tiebreaker. Not gonna happen. More likely? A Gotham win.
2. Bay FC vs. San Diego Wave
Let’s not forget this battle between West Coast teams. San Diego still can, however unlikely a scenario, lift the NWSL Shield if they can deliver a win and Gotham FC lose. They’re three points behind, and would end tied in the above scenario. First tiebreaker is goal differential, which at one goal gives Wave the edge (Gotham’s would go down with a loss, San Diego’s up with a win). Even if they ended level on differential, the Shield would go to the team with more wins, which in this hypothetical would be San Diego. So, yeah, they have something to play for. Sorry, Bay FC.
3. Seattle Reign vs. Orlando Pride
Seattle controls their own destiny. Currently eighth sitting on 44 points, the Reign can guarantee a playoff berth with a victory over Orlando. A draw, however, leaves the door open for North Carolina, while a defeat would put their post-season hopes in serious jeopardy. This match also marks the final regular-season appearance of Seattle legend Jess Fishlock. The Welsh forward joined the Reign in their inaugural 2013 season, is the longest tenured player in club history, and holds nearly every record possible (most goals, most assists, most minutes, most appearances). The least Seattle can do is give her one more playoff match!
4. North Carolina Courage vs. Denver Summit
This one is pure. North Carolina has 42 points; expansion side Denver has 41. If Orlando defeats Seattle, a win by either team propels them into the 8th seed. If Orlando and Seattle draw, a win by North Carolina allows them to jump up. The teams are first and third in the league in goals scored, and as all matches are played simultaneously both have to come out on the front foot with guns blazing. What a tantalizing prospect!. Denver arrives with momentum after demolishing Racing Louisville 6-1, while the Courage are coming off a damaging defeat to Portland.
5. Washington Spirit vs. Chicago Stars
Washington have 52 points and are looking to protect their third place position. With Kansas City (50 points) and Angel City (49 points) close behind, the Spirit cannot afford to take their foot off the gas if they want to secure a favorable quarterfinal matchup and home field advantage. Happily, they face the lowly Chicago Stars, who have only earned one point since August 23rd.
6. Racing Louisville vs. Kansas City Current
While Kansas City could improve their playoff seeding from fourth to third, they’re really playing to defend their position from Angel City and keep that home field advantage. A victory over already-eliminated Louisville could help them climb above Washington, depending on other results.
7. Angel City vs. Boston Legacy
Angel City sits one point behind Kansas City. A win over Boston gives them a possibility of moving up the table, but they need plenty of help. Expansion side Boston are just looking to finish their inaugural campaign with a positive result.
