América could be facing its most important match of the season this Saturday when it takes on Toluca, or at least the game with the biggest implications for its campaign so far.
Midweek Stumble
Earlier this week, América faced Tijuana in a rescheduled Matchday 7 fixture after postponing the game due to its run to the Leagues Cup final four. A victory would have allowed the Águilas to strengthen their grip on first place and move four points clear of their closest pursuers, Cruz Azul and Chivas.
However, América failed to get the job done against Xolos. The team remains at the top of the standings with 28 points, but its lead over Cruz Azul and Chivas has been reduced to just two points, with only three matches remaining in the Apertura 2026 regular season.
A Tough Foe
Now, América faces one of its toughest opponents in Toluca, managed by Antonio ‘Turco’ Mohamed. The Red Devils sit fifth in the standings and are also desperate for a victory. Toluca has proven to be a difficult opponent for América in recent years, making Saturday’s matchup even more significant.
Guillermo Almada opted to rest several key players against Tijuana, keeping his stars fresh for Saturday’s Matchday 15 showdown. The América manager knows what is at stake and is expected to go all out against Toluca.
The Águilas could be without Alejandro Zendejas, who experienced physical discomfort during their 2-1 defeat to Pachuca. América decided to rest the USMNT player against Tijuana to avoid aggravating his injury, leaving his availability for Saturday’s match in doubt.
América also enters the game on a five-match winless streak at the Estadio Azteca. Furthermore, the team has conceded at least one goal in each of its last 10 competitive matches.
Despite boasting the best attack in the tournament with 34 goals scored, América’s defensive struggles have become a major concern heading into the final stretch of the season. Almada has acknowledged the issue in recent press conferences, emphasizing that his team’s inability to keep clean sheets remains a problem.
The Águilas have also developed a worrying tendency to concede early in matches, forcing them to chase games from the opening minutes. With the race for the top spot tightening, the Uruguayan manager will be eager to see his team become more defensively solid before the playoffs begin.
Toluca’s Recent Form
Toluca enters the matchup following a 1-1 draw against León and currently sits fifth in the standings with 23 points.
The team managed by Antonio ‘Turco’ Mohamed is going through a difficult stretch, having gone seven consecutive matches without a victory, including three straight draws in its last three games.
The “Diablos Rojos” have not won since September 15, when they defeated Puebla, a slump that has pushed them down the standings. A victory over América would take Toluca to 26 points and keep the team in contention near the top of the table.
