The Premier League is coming to an end, and it is looking increasingly likely that Liverpool will finish the season in the Champions League qualification spots. An outcome that many would consider disappointing after clinching the title the season before with such dominance and the addition of almost $600 million in signings.
Arne Slot has not had an easy second season in charge and has had an incredibly challenging time dealing with criticism over his tactics, signings, and in-game decisions. The general belief was that he was going to be sacked by the club after a poor run of form and open the path to Xabi Alonso. But as many reports have confirmed, the Liverpool hierarchy have given their full backing to the Dutch manager, and he is now almost certain to be in charge the following season.
Alongside Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes and CEO of Football Michael Edwards, Arne Slot has a huge task on his hands: revamping this current Liverpool team with new incomings and potential departures that could shape the destiny of the club over the next few years.
Replacing Luis Diaz & Mohamed Salah
One of the main question marks and crucial tasks that should be addressed is the new generation of starting wingers in the team. With Mohamed Salah already having announced his departure at the end of the season, and the club still yet to find a replacement for Luis Diaz, signing one or even two top-performing wingers is seen as non-negotiable for the Anfield side if they want to challenge for the title in the upcoming campaign.
But splashing hundreds of millions on two world-class wingers might not be the answer, and in fact, Liverpool might already have one of the two solutions already at the club, with wonderkid Rio Ngumoha available and already proving that he is ready to take a step up in the current squad when needed.
Rio Ngumoha: Liverpool’s Next Big Thing
Ngumoha joined Liverpool from the Chelsea academy in the summer of 2024, with a tribunal deciding that Liverpool had to pay an initial fee of close to $4 million, a figure that could later rise to almost $9.3 million based on performances. At first glance, it appeared to be a huge fee for a player who at the time, was just 15 years old. But he is already proving that he was worth every penny.
Ngumoha started the season slowly, with Arne Slot being very careful with the amount of minutes and opportunities he would give him. But after a number of impressive performances for the team, Rio has now established himself as one of Liverpool’s most lethal weapons in attack and a fan favorite. Many consider him to be Liverpool’s best attacking player at the moment.
Even though his numbers and even goal output are not particularly eye-catching, his performances alone have made a strong statement. Now Slot and the club should consider whether he should become a regular starter in the Liverpool XI or if they should decide to develop him slowly and ease him into the team at a normal pace.
He’s played in a total of 27 games so far this season in all competitions for Liverpool, but he’s played only 788 minutes. Twenty of those 27 appearances he came on as a substitute. Seventeen of those games have been in the Premier League. He’s shown not only that he is more than capable of performing at the top level, but at times it already feels like he is operating well above that level.
Other Elite Players Breaking Through Early
Although the main concern is whether it is right to rush a player with his talent into the starting XI at the age of 17, there are many worries regarding potential injuries during his growth period and even the pressure from the fan base that he might have to deal with at such a young age.
There have been many other success stories of players who accelerated their development at top teams and managed to become regular starters at elite clubs and world-class figures who, to this day, remain among the very best in their positions.
Lamine Yamal is the most notable one, having made his debut at 15 and becoming a regular starter at 16 years old for Barcelona. Jude Bellingham, now at Real Madrid, is another example. He was already a regular starter at 16 but truly established his name during his time at Borussia Dortmund, where he not only became a regular in the starting XI but also one of the club’s most important players.
With many other notable names like Raheem Sterling, who made his Liverpool debut at 17, Michael Owen, a Ballon d’Or winner who was already a regular starter at Anfield by the age of 17, or even Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made his debut at 18 and quickly became Jürgen Klopp’s go-to right-back before eventually joining Real Madrid.
Rio Ngumoha may not be the next Lamine Yamal, but he could definitely be Liverpool’s version of Lamine Yamal, and who knows, he could potentially reach similar heights to the Spanish star. But that could only come with a bigger role in the team next season, and not just any role, but the role he deserves: a spot in the starting XI.
