One of the most anticipated matchups in MLS takes place this weekend. It’s first vs. second as Supporters’ Shield leaders Nashville host reigning MLS Cup winners Inter Miami. These two sides have some recent history. Inter Miami took down Nashville in the first round of last year’s playoffs on the way to their first cup. Nashville then returned the favor in Concacaf Champions Cup earlier this year. This fixture promises high stakes and quality in a potential Eastern Conference final preview.

Nashville Hoping For Rare Win Over Herons

For all of the marquee clashes between these two teams over the past few years, it’s been a surprisingly one-sided rivalry. Despite knocking Inter Miami out of Concacaf Champions Cup this year, they didn’t actually win either of those legs, only advancing on away goals. In fact, Nashville have only beaten Inter Miami once in their last 14 matches against the Herons.

The key to that CCC tie for Nashville was their defense. They only allowed Miami to score once across both games, a goal by Messi early into the second leg. Nashville also held the Herons to below 1.00 xG in both of those matches. Defending has been a strong point for BJ Callaghan’s men all year. They’ve conceded the fewest goals in MLS and are the only team allowing fewer than one goal per game (Vancouver and LAFC both allowing exactly one per game). The back line has been crucial to Nashville’s success, even more so than their fantastic front three.

So what’s the difference between Nashville’s defense this year and last year? Maxwell Woledzi. There was a big hole to fill when club legend Walker Zimmerman hit free agency this past offseason but the 25 year old Ghanaian has hit the ground running. Woledzi joined from Norwegian club Fredrikstad for around $1.5 million and is proving to be an absolute bargain. He’s second in MLS for tackles among center backs.

The other main change was in between the sticks. Brian Schwake took the starting goalkeeper job from veteran Joe Willis and now leads MLS in save percentage. Nashville’s rock solid defense will have their hands full with Lionel Messi this weekend, but if anyone can stop him it’s them.

Inter Miami Going For Second Shield

Before winning MLS Cup last season, Inter Miami captured the other MLS trophy in 2024. They won their first Supporters’ Shield, setting a single season points record with 74. Now they’re going for it again. The Herons currently sit just two points behind Nashville, meaning a win this weekend would vault them into first place.

To get the job done, they’ll need to find a way past Nashville’s league-best defense. That will be a lot easier with Lionel Messi back. Leo’s father and agent Jorge Messi tragically passed away on August 8 at just 68 years old. It was a devastating blow for the footballing world and put into perspective Lionel’s emotions that drew headlines at the World Cup. Messi showed his incredible resilience by returning to action on Wednesday against Club León, playing 45 minutes off the bench. He’ll likely start against Nashville and orchestrate the attack as he always does.

With Messi missing some time after his World Cup run, his former Barcelona teammate had to step up. Luis Suárez has found form of late in MLS play. He’s scored seven goals and provided an assist in his last four games. Suárez has been involved in all but one of Inter Miami’s MLS goals since the break. After sitting out Leagues Cup due to suspension, he’ll be ready to continue his scoring streak in arguably the most important MLS match of the regular season.

Match Prediction

This will no doubt be a closely contested match between the two best teams in the league. Nashville’s form since the World Cup hasn’t been amazing and with Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez in form, it’ll be hard to stop Inter Miami.
