Gilberto Mora’s future could be decided within the next few days.
The Mexican wonderkid, who currently belongs to Xolos de Tijuana, is closing in on his 18th birthday. His name is suddenly becoming one of the hottest stories in the European transfer market, and judging by the numbers being reported, this is no ordinary transfer saga.
According to information reported by David Faitelson, Rafaela Pimenta, Mora’s representative, has a proposal of more than $50 million on the table for the Mexican midfielder to make the jump to European football.
If a deal anywhere near that figure is completed, Mora would become the most expensive Mexican player ever transferred from Liga MX.
And then comes the date everyone is watching: October 14.
That is when Mora turns 18 and can finally be transferred abroad. For now, the identity of the European club remains under wraps.
Liverpool is increasingly being mentioned as the club that could have made the biggest offer, although there is reportedly plenty of interest from other European heavyweights. At this point, saying that Mora’s new club will be announced the very same day he turns 18 almost feels like transfer-market torture.
Everyone wants to know.
Who gets Gilberto Mora?
A European giant? A club where he can immediately compete at the highest level? Or perhaps a development destination in the Eredivisie, the kind of league that has helped several Mexican players take their first steps in Europe before moving to an even bigger stage?
Whatever happens, Mexican football has never really had a situation quite like this.
The current record for the most expensive transfer of a Mexican player from Liga MX belongs to Edson Álvarez, who left América for Ajax in 2019 for around $17 million. Mora potentially blowing that record out of the water before even turning 18 would be absolutely bonkers.
And the timing of everything has only added more fuel to the fire.
Gilberto Mora Left the Mexico Camp
Mora was ruled out of Mexico’s match against the United States during the October international window. The official version was that the player had suffered physical discomfort and would return to Xolos de Tijuana.
But ESPN reported that the midfielder left Mexico’s hotel in Los Angeles through a service exit, traveling in a vehicle with tinted windows as the secrecy surrounding his future intensified.
According to ESPN, Xolos have already received multiple formal offers for the teenager, with one negotiation reportedly further along than the others. That process would involve three people:
- Jorgealberto Hank, the owner of Xolos.
- Rafaela Pimenta, Mora’s agent.
- Gilberto Mora Olayo, the player’s father.
ESPN also reported that Mora’s father was at Mexico’s hotel in Phoenix and had contact with members of the coaching staff on the same day El Tri suffered a 3-0 defeat to the United States.
Because apparently a teenager turning 18 has somehow become a full-blown European transfer thriller.
Was Mora’s Absence Connected to his Future?
The departure naturally raised eyebrows because Mora had been working normally during the international break, and Rafael Márquez had even indicated that the youngster was available to play against the United States.
The Mexico manager explained that Mora had undergone routine medical checks and that the tests had not revealed anything that would prevent him from playing. Yet Mora did not even make the substitutes’ bench against the Americans.
His last appearance for El Tri during this international window came against Colombia, when he scored the goal that rescued a draw and prevented Mexico from losing Rafael Márquez’s first match in charge.
After that, the 17-year-old disappeared from the pitch. Coincidence? Maybe.
But with a potential $50 million-plus European transfer hovering over the situation, it is understandable that everyone is suddenly reading between the lines.
The Big Day: October 14
For now, none of the parties involved has publicly confirmed the identity of the European club or whether a final agreement has been reached. What does appear increasingly clear is that October 14 will be a massive date for Gilberto Mora.
Once he turns 18, the road to a potential international transfer opens up, and Mexican football could be on the verge of witnessing one of the biggest moves in its history.
If the reported figure of more than $50 million becomes reality, Mora would not only make the jump to Europe at just 18 years old — he would completely rewrite the Mexican transfer record.
And suddenly, October 14 doesn’t look like a birthday anymore. It looks like transfer deadline day for the next Mexican superstar.
