The Build-Up to El Clásico

A week ago, the bragging rights for Spanish soccer would comfortably have been in Barça’s hands. That was before they lost 75% of their defense and their first game of the season to PSG in the Champions League. It was before Real Madrid won back-to-back games with a 4-1 scoreline against Sevilla and RB Leipzig. Have the tides turned?

FC Barcelona

Barca have made a spectacular start to the season, coming into El Clásico with a 100% win rate in La Liga. They have dismantled every single opponent they have faced so far and have scored 39 goals. Comfortably sitting at the top of La Liga with a five-point lead over second-placed Atletico Madrid, Barça are the overwhelming favorites in terms of league form. Before that loss to PSG midweek in the Champions League, Barça won 5-2, 4-1, and 3-0 against Real Betis, Galatasaray, and Getafe, respectively.

Real Madrid

Has José Mourinho finally made it all click for Los Blancos? We will find out Sunday. Thirteen years since he last managed an El Clásico, the Portuguese manager is back in the dugout, facing the club he once loved. Life back in the Spanish capital hasn’t been easy for the Special One, but things have turned around for him at least a little bit over the last few weeks.

Sitting third in La Liga with 21 points, behind Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona, Real Madrid have already lost two games in the league. One was against Real Betis, and the other was against Atlético Madrid in the Derbi Madrileno. Both of these teams are currently positioned in the top half, with Atleti in second and Real Betis in fourth. Judging by the pattern, Mourinho has had trouble dealing with teams in the top half. Barcelona are sitting first, so this will raise some concerns in Madrid.

However, that Madrid derby was the last loss Real Madrid endured. Since then, they have won three of their next four games by scoring four goals. Only the tightly contested 1-0 win against Villarreal was a struggle.

Injuries: The Turning Point Ahead of El Clásico

Barcelona are not worried about scoring. They will always score. What concerns them is the sheer number of injuries to their backline. Defenders Andreas Christensen, Eric García, and Jules Koundé are all out for this fixture. Ronald Araújo is enjoying his loan life at Liverpool. Gerard Martin is unpredictable. Alejandro Balde is out of favor with the club. It’s not looking good, bruh.

Fans were screaming and posting their frustrations online over the summer as Barcelona continued to prioritize signing attackers instead of strengthening their already feeble backline. Deco and Joan Laporta chased after Julián Alvarez all summer and didn’t focus on reinforcing any of their defensive positions. João Cancelo, the only defender they signed, arrived late in the summer and didn’t really do much to strengthen the backline, as they already had multiple players excelling in that position.

What they needed was to sign a defensive partner for Pau Cubarsí, and they failed.

Andreas Christensen has never finished a full season with Barcelona, and it looks like he won’t this time either. Eric García being trusted to play multiple positions in the backline and in midfield already puts a lot of pressure on him. Jules Koundé has been out of form since last summer but at least could have put in a shift at center-back. Now that option is also gone. And as much as I’ve sung the praises of Gerard Martín alongside Cubarsí last season, he just hasn’t shown up so far. In big marquee matchups, he is still quite unpredictable, not to mention that he, too, is just coming off an injury.

If Pau Cubarsí gets injured, it’s adios muchachos, for Barça’s season.

Real Madrid Are Not Missing Vinícius Jr.

Nearly two years ago this week, Vinícius put out a tweet saying, “I’ll do it 10x if I have to, they are not ready.” I think he hasn’t even put in 2x of what he wanted to, but it’s not really his fault.

The infamous Vini Jr 10x Tweet

Ever since Kylian Mbappé’s arrival, all the attention and focus of the club have shifted from Vinicíus Jr. to the Frenchman. The last two years have probably been the toughest for the Brazilian winger, who has been constantly underperforming and has been usurped by players for both club and country.

In every game that the Brazilian played for Real Madrid this season, Real Madrid looked ineffective going up the left. Constantly clashing with Mbappé for position, losing a lot of possession, and just overall poor play have turned the fans against him. Despite Mourinho publicly supporting him and being willing to give him time, the red card against Villarreal and subsequent four-game ban for verbally attacking the referee have now put a further halt to his momentum as he tries to return to form.

When Vincius was linked with Arsenal in the summer, many fans were quite content with letting him leave. After his red card and Yan Diomande playing on the left, Madrid have attacked much more freely and scored eight goals in two games. Advantage Real Madrid for El Clásico?
