Every year the UEFA Champions League treats us to some of the most mouth-watering fixtures in world football. This week, one of those matches is upon us. Two of the most dominant teams over the last few years face off in a clash of the titans as Manchester City welcome Paris Saint-Germain to the north of England. These two superclubs have combined for three of the last four Champions League trophies and 14 league titles in the last nine years. They also played against each other in last year’s league phase in a thrilling 4-2 win for the French champions. This match promises to be just as entertaining.

Oil Clásico

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain share a lot of similarities in the ways they reached their success. Both clubs were purchased by Middle Eastern state-backed groups, the Abu Dhabi United Group for City and Qatar Sports Investments for PSG. Those deals happened within a three year span of each other. Since then, the two clubs have dominated their respective domestic leagues. PSG have won 12 Ligue 1 titles and Man City have won eight Premier Leagues, with both also racking up several domestic cup trophies. Due to their owners, this matchup has playfully been dubbed ‘Oil Clásico’ by football fans.

All the money spent by these two clubs since their respective takeovers certainly raised a few eyebrows. LaLiga president Javier Tebas accused PSG of “cheating economically” in 2017. Man City have also been accused of financial doping and were even banned from European competitions for two years back in 2020. However, that ban was reversed because the statute of limitations for the charges had been exceeded. They may have gotten away with it back then, but now their time has come.

Over the international break, Man City were officially found guilty of 114 of 115 charges relating to financial breaches and failing to cooperate with the investigation. The financial breaches were from 2009-2018, with the Premier League first charging City in 2023. An independent commission took three years to reach their verdict. The process will still be drawn out over the next several years before a punishment is determined. When that punishment does come, it will be one of the most consequential days in football history. Anything from significant fines, transfer bans, points deductions, or even relegations is on the table.

Man City Not Letting Scandal Impact Performance

Until that fateful day comes, Manchester City will go about business as usual. Their first match after the verdict came over the weekend against Liverpool, one of the clubs that suffered the most from City’s alleged cheating. The Reds had a lot of motivation for that game, especially considering it was in front of their home crowd at Anfield. None of that mattered when the whistle blew. Liverpool were reduced to 10 men in the 62nd minute and then City scored three quick goals for a statement victory.

Although that was their most important win of the season thus far, it’s far from their only victory. Despite parting ways with names such as Pep Guardiola, Rodri, and Bernardo Silva in the summer, Man City haven’t missed a beat. In fact, City have won every single match to start the 2026/27 campaign, unless you count the Community Shield. They’ve taken 18/18 points in the Premier League, smashed Norwich City in the EFL Cup, and dispatched FC Porto in the Champions League. Now they face their biggest test yet as the back to back Champions League victors come to town.

New manager Enzo Maresca had his work cut out for him when he took the job. Not only did he have to replace one of the greatest tacticians in football history, he had to find a way to replace several longtime pillars of the squad. City took to the transfer market to revamp their midfield, spending a whopping €375 million on three marquee signings. Enzo Fernández and Elliot Anderson form arguably the best double pivot in the league while Ayyoub Bouaddi is an immensely talented prospect for the future. Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo have been at their creative best in the final third. Then there’s the unstoppable force that is Erling Haaland, who’s scored in all but one game this season. Haaland will be the key man this Wednesday after his brace in the first Champions League match against Porto.

PSG Finding Form After Slow Start

Unlike their opponents, PSG started the new season in shaky fashion. They lost the Trophée des Champions to Lens, a trophy they had won 12 of the previous 13 seasons. Les Parisiens then failed to win their first three Ligue 1 matches of the campaign, only barely squeaking out late draws in two of them and losing the third. However, all of that was put to rest when their first Champions League fixture came around. PSG dominated Slovan Bratislava 6-1 and have won all their games since.

Luis Enrique’s side are chasing history in Europe’s premier competition. They could become just the fifth team ever to win it three times in a row. Only one of those came in the Champions League era, 2014-2016 Real Madrid. Their unconvincing start to the season may suggest that they’ve lost a step but this isn’t unfamiliar territory. Despite ultimately winning the trophy, PSG failed to finish in the top eight of the league phase each of the last two years. They dropped points in half their league phase matches both seasons. Even if PSG don’t get a result against City, they’re still more than capable of ending the season as champions once again.

The spine of this PSG team has been around for a few years now, but one man has come into the squad and made an instant impact. Ferrán Torres joined from Barcelona over the summer and has hit the ground running in the French capital. After scoring the decisive goal in the World Cup final over the summer, Ferrán’s confidence has grown exponentially. Once plagued by constant missed chances, the Spaniard has seven goals in his first seven appearances for PSG. That includes a hat trick against Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League. A confident Torres combined with reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and reigning Champions League Player of the Season Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is nightmare fuel for defenders.

Match Prediction

These are two of the best teams in the world and never fail to entertain when they face off. Expect a high-scoring affair that could go either way. Man City have had the better start to the season, but PSG’s star power will ultimately prove too much for them just as it did last year. Ferrán Torres will score against his former club to seal the victory.

Prediction: Manchester City 2-3 Paris Saint-Germain
