Saturday evening at PayPal Park, the San Jose Earthquakes will be hoping for a victory of seismic proportions, as they host MLS’ hottest team: Nashville SC.

Both Sides Could Clinch Honors

The visitors, who entered the league back in 2020 after spending two years in the USL Championship, currently sit at the top of the standings. In fact, with five games remaining, their 14 point lead is so cavernous that a win in San Jose would clinch their first ever Supporters Shield trophy.

San Jose, currently in 4th place in the Western Conference, would clinch a playoff berth with a victory. They’re back home after two games on the road that ended in 1-1 draws. Still, they’re on an eight game undefeated streak and are looking to host their first postseason match since moving to PayPal Park in 2015.

Nashville: Ferocious Attack; Tenacious Defense

There’s no secret formula to Nashville’s success. They’re undefeated in their home stadium, with 14 wins and 1 draw. On the road they’re no slouch either, having taken 23 points from 6 wins and 5 draws in 14 matches.

Up top, their attack is brutal and relentless. Striker Sam Surridge has 17 goals, closely followed by Hany Mukhtar with 15. On the flank, Cristian Espinoza has 12 (or 14 depending on the source) assists, among the league’s highest. Their usual starting defensive line gets in on the scoring action too, they have a cumulative total of 6 goals and 9 assists this season between four players. Nashville have more clean sheets than any other team (14), and have conceded a league-low 22 goals. They’re the complete package.

San Jose Pre-Game Thoughts

Asked about the magnitude of facing Nashville, head coach Bruce Arena commented in his typical understated way: “It’s an important game, and it’s a test against a very good team.”

On the return of Cristian Espinosa, who spent six seasons with San Jose and is still the club’s all-time assist leader (86) before leaving over the winter: “We wish him the best, outside of tomorrow, but he’s an outstanding player and person.”

Both Nashville and San Jose employ the high press, and Arena noted that it will be a critical strategy for the Quakes. “We want to set the tone, and see if we can be successful pressing them, and perhaps turning them over and creating some chances.” Out of San Jose’s 13 wins, they scored first in ten of them. The Quakes also lead the league in goals scored in the first 15 minutes, netting 13 of them. So a quick start is good, but no guarantee. They lost two matches, Seattle 2-3 and Minnesota 1-5, when scoring in the first moments (but have won seven).

Match Frequency & Injury Report

This is also San Jose’s third match in a week. The previous two were played at altitude, and squad rotation has been critical to their success. Arena noted: “We have decent depth. We might not have, you could argue, the best eleven in the league, but we have some reserves that are capable of playing.” German international Timo Werner added that with the rotation “…we should be in a good spot to be fit for the game. Doesn’t matter who’s on the pitch… trust each other to get another three points at home.”

Depth is important, as San Jose currently have seven players unavailable for tonight’s fixture. The biggest absences are midfielder Niko Tsakaris and wing-back Benji Kikanović.

Nashville SC’s tight schedule hasn’t really impacted them too much. They won their last two matches handily, 1-4 at Austin and 4-0 against Kansas City at home. They will be without the services of two bench players, Famara Camara and Owen Presthus, both out with knocks.

Match Details

San Jose and Nashville have faced each other four times, and each tie has ended in a draw. It seems highly unlikely that this match would end thusly, but San Jose probably wouldn’t mind that outcome.
