With all the footballing giants that face off in the Champions League, sometimes clubs from leagues outside the traditional top five are an afterthought. That should not be the case on Wednesday. Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven host Belgian champions Club Brugge in a clash between two underdogs that deserve to be taken more seriously on the biggest stage.

PSV Building Confidence From Eredivisie Demolition
Over the last three years, PSV Eindhoven have won the Eredivisie with relative ease. This season looks to be a little different. The quest for a fourth straight league title has already proven to be more challenging, with PSV dropping points four times in their first 11 matches. They currently sit third behind Feyenoord and Ajax. However, their most recent result will build confidence in the locker room. PSV annihilated Willem II 7-0, their biggest Eredivisie win since April 25, 2024.
That rout will certainly inspire belief around the club that their best football is still ahead of them. De Boeren have proven capable of making noise in the Champions League in recent years. They made the knockout stage two of the last three years and are on pace to do so again this season. PSV earned a point in their first match against Shakhtar Donetsk before narrowly losing to RB Leipzig after missing a penalty. They picked up their first Champions League win of the season last time out, beating Porto 1-0 on the road. Another result this Wednesday would put them on great pace to make the top 24.
The return of Ricardo Pepi from injury could provide a big boost to the PSV attack. Peter Bosz’s side only scored one combined goal in their two Champions League fixtures without the American striker. Pepi missed about a month with a muscle issue but made his return to the team in the 7-0 win over Willem II. He came off the bench in the 60th minute and contributed immediately, scoring a goal and providing an assist. Pepi has proven himself as a goalscorer whenever fit for PSV, scoring 36 goals over the last two seasons. He’s stepped up on the biggest stage as well, scoring the goal that sent PSV to the Champions League knockouts back in the 2023/24 season. Although he likely won’t start against Club Brugge, Pepi could be a gamechanger as a supersub.
Club Brugge Looking For Ninth Straight Win
Their opponents may be struggling a little in their domestic league, but Club Brugge are flying. They have won their last eight matches in all competitions and currently sit top of the Belgian Pro League. Club Brugge have won nine and only lost once in the league, good for 27 points of a possible 30. They’ve won the league five times in the last seven years and are the early favorites to do so once again this year.
Their domestic success has translated at the European level. After a hard-fought 3-2 loss to an Aston Villa side that are currently perfect in the Champions League, Club Brugge have caught fire. They made a huge statement in their second match by walking into the San Siro and leaving with a 4-3 win over Italian champions Inter Milan. De Blauw-Zwart followed that up with a dominant 3-0 victory over Lens, who finished second in Ligue 1 last season. Those results see Club Brugge comfortably in the qualification spots and another win over PSV would put them in the conversation for a top eight finish.
At the heart of Club Brugge’s fantastic start to the season has been Nicolò Tresoldi. The 22 year old striker joined the Belgian giants last summer from Hannover. No adjustment period was necessary as Tresoldi scored 23 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions last season, including four goals and two assists in the Champions League. His goalscoring rate has been even better this year. Tresoldi has 13 goals in 15 appearances for Club Brugge. Three of those strikes came against Inter Milan, which was particularly meaningful for the youngster as he grew up a fan of AC Milan. Tresoldi’s form has caught him in the middle of a battle for his allegiance at the international level. He is eligible for Germany, Italy, and Argentina but currently plays for Germany’s U21s. Tresoldi is currently tied for the Champions Golden Boot and will be chasing another goal against PSV.
Match Prediction
This is a tough match to call as both clubs have been effective Champions League underdogs in recent years. Club Brugge have had the better season thus far, but PSV have the home advantage and are coming off a huge win. I’m going to sit on the fence and say it’ll be an entertaining draw with both sides leaving with something.
Prediction: PSV Eindhoven 2-2 Club Brugge
