Matchday 4 of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase will see FC Porto host Napoli this Wednesday, at the Estádio do Dragão in Portugal. Both sides arrive under considerable pressure and desperately in need of points.
“Must Win” Scenario
Both Porto and Napoli are looking to get their campaigns back on track after disappointing starts that have left them outside the automatic qualification spots for the Round of 16. And with the league phase approaching the halfway point, there is little room left for mistakes.
Porto currently sit 34th with zero points after three defeats, having scored just twice and conceded six goals. Napoli, meanwhile, occupy 23rd place with three points, having recorded one win and two losses. The Portuguese side suffered a 1-0 defeat against PSV Eindhoven on Matchday 3, while the Italians finally got off the mark with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Bodø/Glimt.
A win on Wednesday would be a massive boost for either team. A defeat, on the other hand, could leave their hopes of progressing hanging by a thread. No pressure, lads.
Head-to-head History
The European head-to-head record features four meetings between these clubs. Napoli won both legs of their 1974/75 UEFA Cup tie 1-0, while Porto got their revenge in the 2013/14 Europa League Round of 16, advancing with a 3-2 aggregate victory.
Porto also have a respectable home record against Italian opposition, having lost just four of their 20 matches on home soil against Serie A clubs. Napoli, meanwhile, have gone seven consecutive Champions League away games without a victory. Not exactly the sort of record you want to bring to the Dragão.
Porto on a roll; Napoli aware of the challenge
Massimiliano Allegri addressed the upcoming challenge in his press conference, dismissing injuries as an excuse and refusing to describe the fixture as a last chance. However, he admitted that Napoli’s Champions League campaign has fallen short of expectations.
“Tomorrow’s match will be difficult because Porto come into it after winning 10 consecutive league games and have also played some good matches in the Champions League. As for us, there is little point in talking: we need to put in a good performance. In the Champions League, our destiny is in our own hands because with 10 points we would at least reach the playoffs. But then we need to sort out our league situation, which is the most important thing.”
While Napoli are struggling to find consistency, Porto arrive in considerably better domestic form. The Portuguese giants have won 10 consecutive league matches and most recently demolished Estoril 4-0, a result that kept them at the top of the Primeira Liga standings.
Napoli, by contrast, are enduring a rather uncomfortable spell in Serie A. Allegri’s side sit eighth with just 14 points from a possible 30, an unfamiliar position for a club that would normally expect to be fighting near the top of the table and competing for European qualification.
Injury Report
The visitors will also have to deal with several important absences. Stanislav Lobotka, David Neres, Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Mathías Olivera are all sidelined through injury, leaving Allegri with some serious selection headaches ahead of the trip to Portugal.
Porto have their own concerns, with William Gomes ruled out due to an ankle injury. Zaidu Sanusi and Oskar Pietuszewski remain doubts as they continue to deal with physical problems.
