Newcastle United return to St. James’ Park on Saturday looking to halt a worrying slide, while Aston Villa arrive buoyed by a spectacular European performance and hoping to translate that confidence into Premier League points. Both clubs entered the campaign with ambitions of competing higher up the table, but after six league matches, neither has found the consistency required to match those expectations. For Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle, this is an opportunity to restore confidence after consecutive heavy defeats; for Unai Emery’s Villa, it is a chance to build on their best performance of the season.

Newcastle United: Domestic Frustration

Newcastle sit 11th with eight points from six matches, having won twice, drawn twice and lost twice. Those two losses have come recently, and with particularly damaging scorelines. They suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat at Coventry City on Monday, following an earlier defeat to Leeds United before the break. Defensive mistakes, such as leading the league in penalties, and an inability to control games have become recurring concerns. Newcastle have conceded a league-high 13 goals already (tied with Chelsea and Bournemouth). There have been bright moments, however, such as their 2-1 home victory over Hull City or their 2-0 road win over Tottenham. They have progressed in the EFL Cup and are scheduled to face Everton in the fourth round later this month.

Aston Villa: European Momentum

Aston Villa, meanwhile, languish at the table’s bottom in 16th place with five points. You’d think that would give the Magpies an edge, but Villa have been bolstered by a genuinely strong showing in their non-league campaigns. They have also advanced to the EFL Cup quarterfinals, defeating Newcastle’s nemesis Coventry a comfortable 3-1. They are a perfect two-for-two in Champions League, including a crushing 6-0 shellacking of Fenerbahçe at home in Villa Park. Let’s not forget that Villa were also in 16th place on matchday 6 of last season, and then went on to take the Premier League by storm and finish in fourth place.

Newcastle Team Report

The Magpies’ injury list hasn’t made Jaissle’s job any easier. Winger Anthony Elanga is unavailable with a thigh problem, with his return date uncertain and reports suggesting he could remain out for several more weeks. Full-back Tino Livramento is also sidelined with a hip/thigh issue, with October 25 listed as a possible return date. Midfielder Jacob Ramsey has a thigh injury and could return around the same time, while goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen is out with a hamstring injury expected to keep him sidelined until December. Bazoumana Touré is a doubt after picking up a knock against Coventry. Newcastle will need greater defensive discipline from Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw, while Yoanne Wissa and Joseph Willock are among those expected to provide attacking impetus. One curious fact: Harvey Barnes loves playing Villa. In his past 13 matches against them he’s made 10 goal contributions.

Aston Villa Team Report

Unai Emery’s situation with injury-stricken players mirrors Jaissle, but his absences are concentrated in defence and midfield. Amadou Onana is out with a serious knee injury, with a long recovery expected and no immediate return date. Left-back Matteo Ruggeri has a hamstring injury and is expected to miss more than a month, potentially until November. Ian Maatsen is recovering from an ankle injury and could return around October 24, but Saturday may come too soon.

Modou Cissé is also listed as unavailable, although details of his problem remain unclear. George Hemmings and Brian Madjo are doubts with knee and ankle issues respectively. Ross Barkley will face a late fitness assessment after experiencing pain following his 85-minute appearance against Fenerbahçe. Emery may need to rotate after the midweek exertions, but Nicolas Jackson arrives full of confidence after scoring twice in Europe and newly signed Swiss international Johan Manzambi is in cracking form.

How it Should Play

Recent meetings have favored Villa. They won 2-0 at St. James’ Park in January, with goals from Emi Buendía and Ollie Watkins, extending their unbeaten run against Newcastle to three Premier League matches. Newcastle responded with a 3-1 victory at Villa Park in the FA Cup in February, showing they can exploit Villa’s defensive vulnerabilities. The home side will hope the atmosphere on Tyneside can spark a response, but Villa’s European confidence and attacking threat make them dangerous opponents. Newcastle need a more controlled performance; Villa need to prove their European form can survive the demands of domestic football. Prediction: Newcastle 1 – 3 Aston Villa
