The MLS regular season is running out of time, and the margin for error is getting smaller by the week. This Saturday, New York City FC welcomes Los Angeles FC to Citi Field for a coast-to-coast showdown between two teams with different problems but the same objective: get three points and keep their season on track.

NYCFC needs to stop the bleeding and keep its playoff hopes alive. LAFC, meanwhile, wants to build on a much-needed victory and climb the Western Conference standings. And with Son Heung-min coming off a goal and two assists in his team’s latest win, the Black & Gold have a pretty good reason to feel confident.

New York has problems to solve, Los Angeles has momentum to protect, and neither team can afford to spend 90 minutes pretending everything is fine.

NYCFC Is Running Out of Excuses

New York City FC enters the weekend sitting 10th in the Eastern Conference with 33 points. That’s not exactly where a team wants to be with the playoffs approaching — unless its idea of entertainment is turning the final weeks of the season into a survival thriller.

NYCFC has gone four consecutive matches without a win, most recently suffering a 2-0 defeat against Inter Miami. The slump has left the New Yorkers under pressure to deliver, and their home record hasn’t exactly provided much reassurance.

With four wins, four draws and six losses at home, NYCFC has struggled to turn its own ground into a fortress. At this point, Citi Field needs to be more than a place to play football. It needs to become somewhere opponents actually hate visiting.

The good news? LAFC hasn’t exactly been invincible on the road. The bad news? NYCFC will need considerably more attacking conviction and defensive discipline if it wants to take advantage.

Nicolás Fernández Mercau is one of the players to watch for the hosts, while the attacking contributions of Hannes Wolf, Alonso Martínez and the rest of the front line could prove decisive against an LAFC side with plenty of firepower.

LAFC Has Son Heung-min… That’s a Pretty Good Start

While NYCFC tries to find a way out of its slump, LAFC arrives in New York with a little more breathing room and one of the most dangerous attacking combinations in the league.

The Black & Gold sit sixth in the Western Conference with 45 points and finally snapped a four-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory over Austin FC on October 14. Son Heung-min delivered a goal and two assists, while Denis Bouanga scored twice. Not a bad night’s work.

Son helped set up Bouanga’s opener, played a part in the team’s attacking display and then got on the scoresheet himself to put the result beyond doubt. The South Korean star is looking increasingly comfortable pulling the strings in Los Angeles.

And that’s the problem for NYCFC.

Give Son space, and he’ll punish you. Give Bouanga a sight of goal, and he’ll make you regret it. Leave both of them unattended, and you might as well start looking for the highlights before the final whistle.

LAFC still has work to do away from home, with three wins, six draws and six defeats on the road. But after that performance against Austin, the visitors have every reason to believe they can leave Queens with all three points.

For NYCFC, the challenge will be to maintain its defensive shape without allowing LAFC’s attackers to dictate every phase of the game.

The hosts cannot simply sit back and hope for the best. Against an attack featuring Son and Bouanga, that’s less of a game plan and more of a request for trouble.

The Head-to-Head: LAFC Has the Edge

Recent meetings have also favored Los Angeles. NYCFC has managed just one victory in its last five encounters with LAFC, giving the visitors another reason to approach this matchup with confidence.

Still, history only gets you so far. NYCFC will be playing at home, and LAFC’s away record leaves enough room for an upset if the hosts can finally put together a complete performance.

The question is whether NYCFC can turn desperation into motivation — or whether the pressure will get the better of them once again.

The Verdict

NYCFC needs the points to stay in the playoff race, while LAFC will look to build on its win over Austin FC. Son Heung-min and Denis Bouanga will be key figures for the visitors, while New York needs to find a way to end its four-game winless streak.

One thing is certain: if the New Yorkers defend like they did against Miami, Saturday could get ugly in a hurry.
