Canada’s historic 6-0 victory over Qatar will be remembered for many reasons. It set a new record for margin of victory by a CONCACAF team. Jonathan Davies’ hat-trick was the first by a CONCACAF player since 1930. It was Canada’s first-ever men’s FIFA World Cup win. But It was also a match that highlighted the growing importance of Nathan Saliba within Jesse Marsch’s squad.
Nathan Saliba’s Bio
Saliba hails from Longueuil, Québec, which lies just across the St. Lawrence River from Montréal. He joined the CF Montréal (then known as Impact) academy at 13 years old, making his senior debut in February 2023 against Inter Miami. In July 2025 he transferred to RSC Anderlect in the Belgian Jupiler league. He played in 45 matches for the Paars-Wit last season, accumulating 5g/2a (he also drew 15 yellow cards). Although eligible to play for Haiti through his parents, he committed to Canada and earned 15 caps for the Maple Leafs. He was rostered with the team for this World Cup but spent the first match as an unused substitute.
Ready When Needed
After Ismaël Koné was forced off with a serious injury, Saliba entered the match and quickly made an impact. The midfielder scored his first World Cup goal with a well-taken free kick and later added an assist as Canada completed one of the most dominant performances in its history.
While much of the attention has gone to established stars such as Jonathan David and Cyle Larin, Saliba’s performances throughout the tournament have shown why many view him as one of Canada’s brightest young talents. The 22-year-old has looked comfortable whenever called upon, displaying composure on the ball, strong passing ability, and a maturity that belies his age.
Future Role
With Koné ruled out for the remainder of the tournament, Saliba is expected to play an even larger role moving forward. Replacing a player of Koné’s quality is never easy, but Saliba has already shown he has the tools to help Canada remain competitive in midfield.
His ability to keep possession, move the ball forward, and make intelligent decisions will be especially important against Switzerland. The Swiss are an organized and experienced side that will test Canada’s midfield throughout the match. If Canada is going to secure a positive result and advance to the knockout stage, performances from players like Saliba could prove crucial.
What has been most impressive about Saliba’s tournament so far is how naturally he has adapted to the World Cup environment. Rather than trying to do too much, he has played within himself, supported his teammates, and taken advantage of his opportunities when they have come.
As Canada prepares for its biggest group-stage match, Saliba is quickly becoming one of the players to watch. His strong performance against Qatar has earned him a larger role, and Wednesday’s clash with Switzerland presents another opportunity for the young midfielder to continue his impressive World Cup campaign.
For a Canadian team looking to build on its historic success, Nathan Saliba could be one of the key figures in the next chapter of the tournament.
