Atlanta United FC 3 – 2 Orlando City SC
Orlando was up 2 to 1 in the 77th minute when César Araújo drew a straight red for grabbing a player by the neck during a stoppage. That brief loss of control ultimately cost his team the game. Atlanta was able to rally against the short-handed visitors and get a tying goal from Bartosz Slisz in the 88th and a late winner from Jamal Thiaré two minutes before the final whistle. This was Orlando’s first league loss since Week 3 (March 8th).
D.C. United 1 – 1 New England Revolution
There were two late scores. The first was when New England’s Ilay Feingold hit in the third minute of the first half stoppage. The second, and most impactful, was in the 91st as substitute Gabriel Pirani found the equalizer.
FC Cincinnati 3 – 3 FC Dallas
Fans got good value in this thriller. Cincy took a 2 – 0 lead into the locker room, but Dallas entered the second half hot and had the scoreline level by the 68th minute. When Gerardo Valenzuela’s 88th minute deflected shot dribbled into the net it capped a period of ferocious pressure and looked to give the Orange and Blue the win. But FC Dallas dug deep and Sebastien Ibeagha’s glancing header to the opposite posts in the 92nd put the sides back on even terms.
Inter Miami CF 4 – 2 CF Montréal
The septuagenarian pair of Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez (their combined age is 75) each scored a brace in a comfortable victory over a hapless CF Montréal. The win should alleviate some of the pressure on embattled coach Javier Mascherano, but an attack as weak as Montréal’s (they have the lowest number of goals scored in the East) putting up two still raises questions.
New York City FC 0 – 3 Houston Dynamo FC
NYCFC owned the possession but only had a single shot on frame. With 36%, Houston was ruthless and put 25% of their 12 shots on target. Three of those went in. This was the fourth undefeated game in a row for Houston, indicating the Dynamo have a little streak going.
Columbus Crew 2 – 2 Nashville SC
Nashville scored twice in the closing minutes; sadly the second one was an own goal which gave Columbus the draw. This was a lively and entertaining match, a good choice for the FS1 viewers who watched.
New York Red Bulls 4 – 2 Charlotte FC
Despite outshooting (12 to 11) and outpossessing (60% to 40%) the host team, Charlotte failed to keep the Red Bulls from scoring. Their keeper, Kristijan Kahlina, has allowed 20 goals in the past seven games, six of which Charlotte lost.
Toronto FC 1 – 2 Philadelphia Union
Better late than never, right? Union took that adage to heart, relying on late goals from Nathan Harriel (86) and Kai Wagner (90+2) to topple Toronto.
Austin FC 1 – 1 Real Salt Lake
Both sides ended this game with very different emotions. For Austin, there was palpable relief Diego Rubio headed in the goal in the third minute of stoppage, snatching back a point for the host side. RSL had to feel aggrieved to let those two points slip away. But let’s not forget at both teams are on long winless streaks: Austin’s is eight; Salt Lake’s is seven.
LA Galaxy 0 – 1 San Jose Earthquakes
It would be unfair to say this particular El Clásico moved with the speed of L.A. traffic… but it kinda felt that way. Galaxy actually got in the net first, only to see it chalked off for offsides. That really is the story of Galaxy’s season, isn’t it?
Seattle Sounders FC 1 – 0 San Diego FC
Jesus Ferreira sure picked a good time to score his first Sounders goal of the season, spinning around defender Chris McVey before slotting it into the net past San Diego’s keeper Carlos Dos Santos. Seattle’s Swiss goalkeeper Stefan Frei made seven saves on the night to uphold the clean sheet.
Portland Timbers 2 – 1 Colorado Rapids
The Rapids started strong when their DP midfielder Djordje Milhailovic hit a precision strike into the far corner in the 33rd minute. Colorado were bolstered after Felipe Mora’s penalty kick was stopped by Nicholas Defreitas-Hansen in the 41st minute, and they were controlling the run of play as the second half started. But when Portland’s Antony found some space and nabbed the equalizer in the 59th minute, Colorado began to wobble. When substitute Wayne Frederick’s dangerous studs up sliding challenge was deemed worthy of a straight red in the 69th, Colorado went into freefall. The winning goal from Kevin Kelsy came moments later and Portland saw out the victory.
Vancouver Whitecaps 0 – 0 Minnesota United FC
Despite Vancouver’s superior efforts (19 shots, 60% possession and 8 corners) they had a real problem targeting the net. Minnesota, on the other hand, had a hard time putting any real attacking threat into play (they took 4 shots total). In the end, the stalemate preserved each team’s Western standing, and extended Vancouver’s unbeaten run to 10 games.
