St. Louis CITY SC have transformed their season from a campaign in danger of slipping away into one of Major League Soccer’s most remarkable late-year surges. Now, with the Western Conference leaders Vancouver Whitecaps visiting Energizer Park, the reward for their extraordinary revival could be a place at the top of the table… and a place in MLS history.
St. Louis won a single game in their first 10 matches, languishing at the bottom of the table in 14th place. Since then, head coach Yoann Damet’s side have put together an astonishing 20-game unbeaten run across all competitions, matching the MLS record. Their 18 consecutive league matches without defeat have carried them to second in the West, with 50 points from 28 games, just one behind Vancouver.
From Worst to… First?
Their latest performance offered a compelling illustration of how far they have come. St. Louis demolished the LA Galaxy 6-2 on Sunday, racing into a three-goal lead before the match had barely settled. It was their fourth consecutive victory and another statement that this is no longer the struggling side from the season’s early months.
The summer arrivals of Carlo Holse and Rafael Navarro have helped fuel the turnaround. In eleven games since joining from Samsunspor, the Danish playmaker Holse has bagged six goals, including a hat-trick inside the opening 21 minutes against LA, the second-fastest hat-trick from kickoff in MLS history. Brazilian striker Navarro, acquired from Colorado in a club-record $12 million trade, has produced seven goals and three assists in just five starts for CITY. Simon Becher, a 27 year-old striker with almost no pedigree, has bagged nine goals this season as well.
There is defensive rigor behind the attacking fireworks, too. Goalkeeper Roman Bürki remains a dependable last line of defense, while Chris Durkin and Daniel Edelman provide the midfield foundation. While St. Louis only have four clean sheets, they have conceded the sixth-fewest goals in MLS this season, an important reason their revival has proved sustainable.Â
Shaky at the Top
Vancouver comes into this contest with a very different recent narrative. The Whitecaps have been among the league’s strongest sides for much of the campaign, but their momentum has stalled: they are winless in their last three matches, including a 3-1 defeat to Chicago and a 1-1 draw away to LAFC. The point in Los Angeles came despite playing almost the entire match with 10 men after Tristan Blackmon’s seventh-minute dismissal. Vancouver have nevertheless secured their fourth consecutive playoff berth and remain first in the West with 51 points.
Their leading scorer, Brian White, has 17 league goals and remains the focal point of the attack. Thomas Müller has added nine goals and eight assists, but is out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury. Yohei Takaoka’s 11 clean sheets underline Vancouver’s defensive quality, but this will come under fire tomorrow against one of the league’s most dangerous attacks.. Blackmon’s suspension leaves a significant hole in the back line; MathÃas Laborda is his likely replacement.
Head to Head Record
The recent head-to-head record gives St. Louis reason for confidence. CITY claimed their first-ever win at Vancouver’s BC Place on September 5, beating the Whitecaps 3-1 through goals from Simon Becher, Tomas Totland and Conrad Wallem. The teams drew 0-0 in St. Louis during the 2025 season before Vancouver won the return fixture 3-2. St. Louis recorded their first victory in the series in May 2023, winning 3-0.

History in the Making
Wednesday’s meeting is therefore about more than three points. A St. Louis victory would take them above Vancouver into first place, a position few would have dreamed of back in April. Of course, a draw would also extend their unbeaten streak to a new all-competitions MLS record. Vancouver will be determined to halt their recent slide and protect their position at the summit.
For St. Louis, the challenge is to turn their remarkable momentum into a defining result against the conference’s established pace-setters. For Vancouver, it is an opportunity to remind the West that their strong start was no fluke. With the standings, the record books and playoff positioning all in play, this could be one of the most consequential matches of the regular season.
