Forget the usual derby clichés. Pumas and Cruz Azul have turned their rivalry into a full-blown obsession, fueled by historic heartbreak, stadium drama, transfer-market betrayals and enough social media shithousery to keep both fanbases busy all week.
Pumas host Cruz Azul this Sunday, October 11, in Matchday 11 of the Apertura 2026, and there is plenty at stake beyond three points. One side is trying to keep its season from falling apart; the other arrives in considerably better shape and would love nothing more than to make its neighbors miserable.
Joel Huiqui’s Cruz Azul sit seventh with 16 points, while Esteban Solari’s Pumas are languishing in 13th with 12. Solari’s job is reportedly under pressure, and another disappointing result would hardly help his cause. The hosts are coming off a painful 3-2 defeat at home against Atlético de San Luis, while La Máquina salvaged a 3-3 draw against Toluca before the international break.
Cruz Azul could also be without star midfielder José Paradela, who is dealing with a muscular injury. The problem is not considered serious, but his availability remains uncertain. Carlos Rotondi and Amaury García are also question marks after training separately, with Rotondi potentially returning depending on his physical condition.
But league positions and injury reports only tell part of the story. To understand why this fixture is known as the Clásico de la Obsesión, you need to look beyond the pitch. For nearly three decades, these fanbases have been keeping score in every possible way, celebrating each other’s failures almost as enthusiastically as their own successes.
Welcome to Mexican football, where a rival’s bad day is practically a national holiday.
Why Is This Fixture Called the ‘Clásico de la Obsesión’?
The nickname comes from a rivalry that has grown well beyond the 90 minutes on the pitch. Pumas and Cruz Azul supporters have spent years monitoring each other’s fortunes, trading insults, celebrating defeats and turning every significant result into ammunition for the next round of banter.
Neither side needs an official trophy to declare victory in this particular contest. Sometimes, all it takes is the other team losing.
Several episodes have taken this feud to another level.
1. Cruz Azul Turned Pumas’ Stadium Into Its Own Fortress
When the Estadio Azteca closed for renovations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Cruz Azul needed somewhere to play its home matches. Its temporary solution was the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, the home of Pumas, throughout 2025.
Sharing a stadium with your fiercest rivals is awkward enough. Watching them thrive in your own backyard is another matter entirely.
La Máquina made itself comfortable at Ciudad Universitaria, putting together an unbeaten run that rewrote the stadium’s record books. During the first half of 2025, Cruz Azul won five matches and drew three there, collecting 18 points. Pumas, meanwhile, managed just 12 points from 27 available in their own home games.
The irony was impossible to miss: Cruz Azul were getting better results in Pumas’ house than Pumas themselves.
For the supporters in blue and gold, the arrangement offered plenty of reasons to complain. For the Cementeros, it was a chance to remind everyone that a temporary address could still feel like home.
And then came the biggest insult of all: Cruz Azul started winning silverware there, too.
2. The 4-0 Collapse That Still Haunts Cruz Azul
If there is one match that perfectly captures the psychological warfare between these clubs, it is the 2020 Liga MX semifinal.
Cruz Azul demolished Pumas 4-0 in the first leg of the Guardianes 2020 semifinals. With a four-goal advantage, La Máquina appeared to have one foot in the final. Its supporters had every reason to feel confident, and social media quickly became a parade of blue-and-white mockery.
Then came the second leg at Ciudad Universitaria.
Pumas scored four goals, erased the entire deficit and leveled the aggregate score at 4-4. Because Universidad Nacional had finished higher in the regular-season standings, the Auriazules advanced to the final against León.
Cruz Azul had gone from celebrating a seemingly unassailable lead to watching its season implode in spectacular fashion.
Pumas ultimately lost the final 2-0, but that barely softened the blow for their rivals. The damage had already been done, and the memes were ready to outlive everyone involved.
For Pumas fans, it was an unforgettable comeback. For Cruz Azul supporters, it was another chapter in a history that has supplied more than enough material for their rivals.
3. Cruz Azul Won a Continental Title at CU — Then Had to Leave
The stadium saga reached another level in 2025.
After leaving the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes in April 2018, Cruz Azul spent years moving between venues. Its temporary arrangement at the Olímpico Universitario was supposed to provide some stability while the Estadio Azteca underwent renovations.
Instead, it created one of the strangest chapters in this rivalry.
Cruz Azul settled in, extended its unbeaten streak at CU to 25 consecutive matches and won the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup with a crushing 5-0 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps. The triumph also brought the club level with América on seven continental titles at the time.
Winning a continental trophy in your rivals’ stadium is the sort of thing that can keep a fanbase insufferable for years.
But the party had an expiration date.
Cruz Azul hoped to remain at CU for the Clausura 2026, only for negotiations with UNAM to collapse shortly before the new season. The university and the club failed to agree on an extension, forcing La Máquina to find another home at short notice.
The club eventually moved to the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla.
Cruz Azul’s leadership reportedly felt aggrieved by the handling of the negotiations, claiming the conditions had changed and that the club had been left scrambling just days before the tournament began.
So, to recap: Cruz Azul moved into Pumas’ home, broke records, won a continental championship and then had to pack its bags.
If this were a sitcom, the writers would be accused of going too far.
4. The Carrasquilla Challenge That Left Kevin Mier Injured
Not every chapter in this rivalry is funny.
One of the most controversial recent incidents occurred during Matchday 17 of the Apertura 2025, when Pumas midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla collided with Cruz Azul goalkeeper Kevin Mier while challenging for the ball.
Carrasquilla arrived late and struck the Colombian goalkeeper’s leg with considerable force. Mier was unable to continue, and subsequent medical examinations revealed a fractured tibia that kept him out of action for approximately four months.
Referee Fernando Hernández reviewed the incident but showed Carrasquilla only a yellow card. Hernández was subsequently suspended for the entire Liga MX playoffs.
Cruz Azul’s board asked the Disciplinary Commission to impose a suspension on Carrasquilla equivalent to the time Mier spent sidelined. The request was rejected, and no additional punishment was handed to the Panamanian midfielder.
Understandably, the decision left La Máquina furious.
For supporters already convinced that every controversial decision somehow makes their club a victim, the episode provided another reason to keep the rivalry simmering. For everyone else, it was a reminder that some disputes go well beyond the usual terrace banter.
5. The Transfer Market Has Become Another Battlefield
Nothing says rivalry quite like watching your club lose a key player to its neighbor.
In recent years, Cruz Azul have landed several players who previously represented Pumas, including Erik Lira, one of Universidad Nacional’s most important homegrown talents, and Gabriel Fernández.
Fernández’s move particularly irritated some Pumas supporters, especially after the striker explained that Cruz Azul’s history was a major factor in his decision.
Apparently, the grass was greener on the other side — or at least the contract was more appealing.
The traffic has not always gone in one direction. Francisco Palencia, strongly associated with Cruz Azul during his playing career, later joined Pumas and helped the university side win the Clausura 2011 championship.
That move provided its own dose of controversy and proved that the rivalry does not require a player to insult his former club to make supporters take things personally.
In football, changing shirts is a professional decision. In a derby, it can be treated like treason.
6. Efraín Juárez’s ‘Aquí Hay Huevos’ Celebration
The rivalry has also produced moments that are tailor-made for social media.
During the Clausura 2026, Pumas found themselves trailing 2-0 and playing with ten men. Rather than surrender, Juárez’s side fought back to secure a dramatic draw in the closing minutes.
After the final whistle, Efraín Juárez approached the Pumas supporters and made a provocative gesture toward his groin while shouting, “Aquí hay huevos” — essentially telling everyone that his team had balls.
The celebration instantly became another talking point in the rivalry. Juárez received a financial penalty, but the incident had already achieved its intended effect: giving supporters another clip to replay whenever the two sides meet.
Whether you viewed it as passion, provocation or a touch of theatre, one thing was clear: nobody involved was interested in keeping things quiet.

More Than Three Points
Pumas vs Cruz Azul is about much more than the league table. It is about the comeback that refuses to be forgotten, the stadium that became an unexpected fortress, the trophy lifted on hostile territory, the players who crossed enemy lines and the gestures that live forever online.
Cruz Azul arrive in better form, but Pumas have home advantage and plenty of motivation to disrupt their neighbors’ plans.
And with Solari under pressure, Huiqui’s side chasing a stronger position and Paradela’s fitness in doubt, Sunday’s encounter has all the ingredients for another memorable chapter.
