I don’t mean to be Mr. Negative over here, but it seems like this tournament has been going on FOREVER. Last night’s fixtures made most of these games totally irrelevant, though there’s still a tiny window of opportunity for some MLS sides to work a miracle.

FC Cininnati vs. Guadalajara

TQL Stadium, Cincinnati, OH

Guadalajara

Mathematically, FC Cincinnati still have a chance, but the scenario is bleak. First, they have to win. The win has to be by a two-goal margin to improve their goal differential. They also need LA Galaxy to lose. I’ve seen crazier things in the beautiful game, but this is a serious long shot.

Monterrey vs. Charlotte FC

Monterrey

August 7 @ 7:30pm ET
Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC
Broadcast of FS1 and TUDN
Streaming on AppleTV MLS Season Pass

Charlotte FC

Womp womp. Monterrey is on two points; Charlotte one. Swipe right.

New York Red Bulls vs. FC Juarez

New York Red Bulls

August 7 @ 7:30pm ET
Sports Illustrated Stadium, Harrison, NJ
Streaming on AppleTV MLS Season Pass

FC Juarez

FC Juarez controls their fate. They’re sitting on five points and in fifth place. All the teams above have played. All they need is a draw, and they will pip Puebla for fourth place. Much like Cincinnati, Red Bulls technically still have a chance, but would need to win by three goals.

Cruz Azul vs. Colorado Rapids

Cruz Azul

August 7 @ 8:30pm ET
Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, CA
Streaming on AppleTV MLS Season Pass

Colorado Rapids

Cruz Azul has two points. In the words of my good friend (and diehard Cruz Azul supporter), “their morale is probably pretty low and they just want to get back home.” The Rapids have three points but no path forward.

LA Galaxy vs. Santos

August 7 @ 11:15pm ET
Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, CA
Broadcast of FS1
Streaming on AppleTV MLS Season Pass

Santos

LA Galaxy actually has something to play for. With four points and a +3GD, a win over Santos would catapult them over Columbus Crew into the fourth spot. As Santos is only one of three Liga MX teams that has failed to earn a point, LA have to like their odds.
