Fourth-seeded Kansas City Current and fifth-seeded Angel City FC meet Saturday in one of the most evenly matched quarterfinals of the 2026 NWSL playoffs. Just one point separated the clubs in the final regular-season standings, and both arrive in Kansas City with considerable momentum. The Current have won five consecutive matches; Angel City are unbeaten in their last 10. Neither side can claim the underdog label, and both have legitimate ambitions of reaching the semifinals.

Head-to-head History

The regular-season meetings suggest little separates them. Angel City claimed a 2-1 victory at home on May 21, while the return fixture at CPKC Stadium on August 1 ended in a 1-1 draw. Kansas City therefore have yet to beat Angel City this season, despite finishing above them in the standings. The August draw is particularly relevant: Angel City have already demonstrated they can compete at CPKC Stadium, where the Current have otherwise been extraordinarily difficult to beat.

Kansas City have a stronghold, and an arsenal

The Current finished the season with 53 points, 54 goals scored and that five-match winning streak. Home field advantage isn’t just a platitude for Kansas City – their home record is crazy impressive. They went unbeaten at CPKC Stadium throughout the regular season, winning 11 and drawing four of their 15 matches. They also scored a franchise-record 39 goals at home.

The Current have one of the league’s most productive forward partnerships in Temwa Chawinga and Haley Hopkins. The pair have each scored 12 league goals. Chawinga’s pace and ability to attack space behind defenders make her especially dangerous, while Hopkins offers a more traditional penalty-area presence.

When you add midfielder Croix Bethune into that mix, you get a very potent attacking cocktail. Bethune established a new NWSL single-season record with 11 assists and six game-winning assists. She’s the creative link between midfield and attack. And don’t forget about Debinha. Although the Brazilian veteran just turned 35, she’s another major offensive threat. She also just became the league’s all-time leading scorer across all competitions with her 83rd career goal in August.

To win, Kansas City must translate their attacking quality into an early advantage. They’ll have to use the width of the field, move Angel City’s defensive block around and avoid becoming predictable. With the crowd behind them, an early goal could make the visitors’ task considerably harder.

Angel City arrive with momentum

Angel City has undergone a remarkable turnaround since last season. Their 52-point finish represents a club record, and it’s nearly double the 27 points they earned in 2025. With 54 goals scored, they not only matched Kansas City’s league-leading total but also improved over last season’s total of 31. Their 10-match unbeaten streak entering the playoffs is also unprecedented, giving them tremendous momentum heading into this tie.

Icelandic international Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir has been the standout attacking player in a squad full of offensive excellence. She finished with 10 goals and established a new single-season scoring record for the club. Her partnership with fellow striker Ally Sentnor and left winger Maiara Niehues produced a whopping 37 goals contributions (27g / 10a). One eye-opening statistic: every Angel City starter in their final match had at least one goal contribution, excluding the keeper. That’s scary.

There’s some depth to this side as well. Though she had a quiet season, Scottish veteran Claire Emslie offers experience and attacking quality. Rookie Taylor Suarez has emerged as an important weapon off the bench, earning Rookie of the Month recognition and contributing two assists in the 4-1 Decision Day victory over Boston.

At the other end, goalkeeper Angelina Anderson has enjoyed a record-setting campaign, recording 10 shutouts and 79 saves. Captain Sarah Gorden is central to the defensive organization, while Emily Sams and Savy King provide additional quality and athleticism across the back line.

Angel City’s route to victory requires patience and discipline. They must avoid giving Chawinga and Hopkins room to run, protect the central areas around Bethune and exploit opportunities on the counterattack. Their ability to create chances from multiple positions makes them difficult to defend, but they cannot afford to surrender possession cheaply.

Team news and the deciding factors

Happily, injury doesn’t appear to have hampered either side. The latest NWSL availability report, published October 31, listed Kansas City’s Alana Cook and Clare Gagne among those unavailable. Angel City were without Jun Endo, Hina Sugita and Prisca Chilufya. Obviously,  updated matchday availability should be checked before kickoff.

Kansas City have home advantage, a formidable attacking partnership and an outstanding record at CPKC Stadium. Angel City have the longer unbeaten streak, a balanced scoring attack and the confidence that comes from already taking points from the Current twice this season.

The Hooligan Take

The Current will want to impose their attacking rhythm; Angel City will look to disrupt it and use their speed in transition. Whichever team handles the pressure of knockout football more effectively will earn a place in the semifinals. This is a genuine 50-50 matchup, and being so even, I have to go with the home team. Kansas City will edge out Angel City 3-2 in extra time.
