The Former Players Angle
Players who swap the red and blue of Barca for the red and blue of Paris have rarely ever moved on amicable terms. Some of these exits have been messier than my breakup, even. Here are the ones to keep an eye out for.
Ferran Torres
Ever since Ferran Torres scored the goal against Argentina that won Spain the FIFA World Cup, he has suddenly become a different man. Appearing on talk shows, going on press tours, and announcing to Barcelona that they “must show that they love me” when it comes to renewing his contract. For years, Barça and Ferran have had a strange relationship.
Ferran has been an inconsistent striker throughout his time in Catalonia, but Barca continued to give him chances to play and get better. Spending most of his time there as an understudy to Robert Lewandowski, Ferran failed to ever perform consistently and became notorious for missing sitters and easy one-on-ones. The saga became so bad that Ferran even announced he was suffering from depression due to his failures.
Last summer, as Robert Lewandowski announced his departure from Barça, Ferran could have easily become the number one striker. And despite Barcelona offering Ferran a new contract, he decided to abandon the club that stuck by him and join Luis Enrique at PSG.
That move didn’t go down well at the club, which posted quite a shady departure announcement. Almost none of his Barça teammates publicly thanked him for his time at the club under his personal departure post on Instagram, and he also seemingly became isolated from his former Barça mates at the Spanish national team camp.
Ousmane Dembélé
If you had told me during Dembélé’s time at Barça that he would ever win a Ballon d’Or, I would have laughed in your face. However, I always knew he had the potential. That potential only came true once he left Barcelona, also on similarly unpleasant terms.
Dembélé signed for Barça as its most expensive signing ever, bought from Borussia Dortmund with the Neymar money. However, that turned out to be a medical disaster early on, as the Frenchman missed nearly 115 matches in his first four years at the club.
Fans had lost patience with him and were calling him “démbulance”. But after Xavi took over the club in late 2021, and Messi’s departed, the manager decided to make Dembélé the focal point of the team. The medical team had also identified key shortcomings behind his injuries and made new, customized plans to take care of his fitness.
Despite the board threatening to banish him to the stands if he didn’t renew his contract on the club’s terms, Xavi opposed the board and continued playing him, which led to Dembélé providing his best soccer at the club.
But when he eventually renewed his contract, his agent inserted a unique “transfer obligation clause.” If any club bid €50 million (around $55 million at that time) before August 1, 2023, Barcelona was legally required to let him go. The worst part is that the contract stated that Dembélé and his agent would receive half of the fee. So when PSG bid exactly that number for a player who was worth three times that price at the time, Dembélé immediately jumped ship to his native France while pocketing a nice $27.5 million bonus for himself and his agent.
Dro Fernandez
Dro Fernandez was a highly regarded wonderkid who emerged from La Masia and was integrated into the first team by Hansi Flick at just the age of 17.
Despite getting decent game time and a chance to consistently feature for the Barcelona first team in both La Liga and the Champions League, Dro surprised everyone by refusing to extend his contract in January 2026. The midfield prodigy had an extremely low release clause of around $6.6 million, which Barça were surely attempting to increase significantly with this new contract. But before that could happen, PSG once again swooped in and took Barça’s best-rated midfield prodigy in years for peanuts.
FC Barcelona vs PSG: The Build Up
Barcelona, in Hansi Flick’s third season in charge, have made their best-ever start to a season. The Catalan club have won nine of their opening nine La Liga matches, tying the record for the best start in La Liga history. They have also won both of their opening Champions League games this season, making their start to the season perfect, with 11 wins out of 11 games. They have scored an astonishing 48 goals in those 11 games, an average of 4.36 goals per game. Barça are coming off a 5-2 victory over fellow Champions League side Real Betis and will face Real Madrid in El Clásico this weekend.
PSG might sit second in the Ligue 1 table, but they have been far from convincing. The Parisians started their season with a 1-0 loss to Lens in the Trophee des Champions and began their league campaign with three winless games. Despite their domestic wobbliness, they have been incredible in the Champions League, having scored 10 goals in victories against Manchester City and Slovan Bratislava. Their most recent game, a 3-1 victory over Strasbourg, required late heroics, as Strasbourg were winning the game comfortably until the 78th minute.

FC Barcelona vs PSG: Expected XI and Prediction
Barcelona always seem to find themselves in an injury crisis just before they face PSG. Recent knocks to Eric García and Jules Koundé mean Barça’s defense is once again thin. Andreas Christensen has also been on the injury list since last month.
For PSG, Nuno Mendes is the biggest miss for this fixture, as the Portuguese midfielder picked up an injury against Strasbourg in Ligue 1. That means Lamine Yamal will not be coming up against one of the best left backs in the world, giving Barcelona a slight advantage in the tie.

Prediction: Barcelona 3-2 PSG
