Czechia is the only team in Group A that decided not to establish its base camp in Mexico. Miroslav Koubek’s side chose Dallas–Mansfield Multipurpose Stadium as its home during the World Cup, a decision that will have them spending plenty of time in airports over the next few weeks.

Their tournament begins on June 11 in Guadalajara against South Korea. From there, they’ll travel to Atlanta to face South Africa on June 18 before flying back to Mexico for a showdown with the host nation at Estadio Ciudad de MĂ©xico on June 24.

The flights themselves are manageable, but flying remains the only realistic way to get from one venue to the next. Will the travel affect them? That’s one of the great mysteries of Group A. Coaches will tell you no. Players will tell you no. If they lose two games, everyone will suddenly decide it was the reason all along.

How They Qualified

Czechia took the scenic route to the World Cup.

Their path to 2026 was absolute chaos. The Czechs reached the tournament through the UEFA playoffs after surviving two consecutive penalty shootouts. First, they eliminated the Republic of Ireland. Then they repeated the trick against Denmark to secure their first World Cup appearance since 2006.

The remarkable part? They weren’t favored in either matchup.

Against Ireland, Czechia even found itself trailing 2-0 before mounting a comeback that kept the dream alive. Some teams qualify by dominating opponents. Czechia qualified by repeatedly refusing to die.

Key Players

Patrik Schick

The Bayer Leverkusen striker remains the biggest star on the roster.

A proven goalscorer at both club and international level, Schick is Czechia’s primary attacking weapon and the player most likely to produce a moment of brilliance when his team desperately needs one.

If Czechia is going to pull off an upset in this group, chances are Schick’s fingerprints will be all over it.

Tomáš Souček

The captain and emotional heartbeat of the team.

SouÄŤek brings leadership, experience, and the kind of physical presence that every manager loves and every opposing midfielder hates. He arrives as one of the most experienced players in the squad after years in the Premier League.

Granted, his most recent season ended with West Ham being relegated, which is not exactly the type of souvenir you want to bring to a World Cup. Still, his leadership remains invaluable for a team making its long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage.

Potential Breakout Player: Hugo SochĹŻrek

At just 17 years old, SochĹŻrek is one of the youngest players at the tournament.

He recently became the youngest player ever to appear for the Czech national team and is widely regarded as one of the country’s brightest prospects.

Will he start? Probably not.

Will Czech fans spend the entire tournament demanding that he start after every match? Absolutely.

World Cup History

  • 10 World Cup appearances (including those as Czechoslovakia).
  • First appearance: 1934.
  • Best finish: Runner-up in 1934 and 1962.
  • Most recent appearance: Germany 2006.
  • The 2026 tournament marks Czechia’s first World Cup appearance in 20 years.

For younger Czech fans, the World Cup has been more myth than reality. Some of them have spent their entire lives hearing stories about Germany 2006 the same way others hear stories about ancient civilizations.

Coach Profile: Miroslav Koubek

At 74 years old, Koubek is one of the oldest managers at the World Cup.

He took over in December 2025 after a shocking defeat to the Faroe Islands triggered a coaching change. That loss looked like a disaster at the time. Instead, it became the turning point that eventually led Czechia back to the World Cup.

His experience in domestic football proved invaluable, and he quickly guided the team through the playoff gauntlet.

If experience counts for anything, Koubek has plenty of it. If sleep is important, however, the stress of those playoff shootouts probably cost him a few years.

Country Fun Facts

  • Czechia has a population of roughly 11 million people.
  • The country is famous for its castles, medieval architecture, and historic city centers.
  • Prague is one of Europe’s most visited cities.
  • Czechia consistently ranks among the world’s leaders in beer consumption per capita.
  • Football legends such as Pavel NedvÄ›d, Petr ÄŚech, and Tomáš RosickĂ˝ helped build the country’s football identity.

Fan Culture

Czech supporters are passionate, loyal, but considerably less dramatic than many of their European counterparts.

They travel well, create strong atmospheres, and generally prefer supporting their team over trying to become the main attraction themselves.

After waiting two decades for another World Cup appearance, thousands are expected to make the trip to North America. Nobody should be surprised if some of them celebrate qualification like they already won the tournament.

Outlook

Czechia don’t have Mexico’s home advantage. They don’t have South Korea’s star power. They certainly don’t have the pressure that comes with hosting a World Cup.

What they do have is organization, experience, resilience, and a team that already survived multiple do-or-die moments just to get here.

Nobody should be shocked if Czechia advances.

Nobody should be shocked if Czechia finishes third and sneaks through either.

Frankly, that’s what makes them dangerous.

The Hooligan Take

  • Czechia finishes third in Group A.
  • Advances as one of the best third-place teams.
  • Annoys absolutely everyone along the way.

No one will pick them to advance.

Czech fans will spend the group stage convinced disaster is around the corner. Then they’ll somehow wake up in the Round of 32 wondering how this keeps happening.

That’s Czech football.
