No one expected Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia on Matchday 3 to become one of the most important fixtures in Group H. Most predicted that the group would already be decided by now and that this match would simply be about pride and finishing the tournament on a high note.

Instead, with every single team in the group still in contention to qualify for the knockout rounds, Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia has suddenly become one of the must-watch fixtures of the group stage, alongside the blockbuster clash between Spain and Uruguay.

Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia: The Build-Up

Who would have believed me if I said that Cape Verde would be unbeaten heading into the final matchday of their first-ever FIFA World Cup?

The debutants and one of the smallest nations ever to qualify for the tournament have already exceeded every expectation. The Blue Sharks have seen out threats from both Spain and Uruguay, accumulating two draws and getting their first two World Cup goals against the latter as well.

Against Spain, they produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by securing a goalless draw despite facing wave after wave of attacks, deflected by their defence and their star goalkeeper Vozinha. Against Uruguay, they followed that up with another bold performance, coming back twice to secure a thrilling 2-2 draw with a Roberto Carlos-esque goal from Kevin Pina and a goal from Hélio Varela off the bench.

Saudi Arabia’s campaign hasn’t been all that bad as well.

While they couldn’t copy the heroics of Cape Verde and get points over Spain, the Green Falcons frustrated Uruguay in their opener and could easily have taken all three points. They attacked in the first half then defended brilliantly in the second and executed their game plan almost perfectly. However, they were brought back down to earth against Spain, suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat that exposed the gulf (pun intended) in quality between themselves and one of the tournament favorites.

Despite sitting fourth in the group and behind Cape Verde on goal difference, Saudi Arabia knows that a victory could dramatically change everything and potentially send them into the knockout rounds.

Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia: The Tactical Battle

For the first time at this World Cup, Cape Verde will not enter a match as the clear underdog.

Against Spain and Uruguay, the Blue Sharks were comfortable defending deep and playing on the counterattack. They willingly surrendered possession and waited for opportunities to exploit space in transition.

Likewise, Saudi Arabia also prefers a compact defensive structure and quick transitional attacks. Georgios Donis understands that his team does not possess the technical quality to dominate possession against quality opposition.

Neither side is naturally comfortable taking the initiative. That raises a question.

Who blinks first?

Cape Verde may attempt to have more of the ball than it has enjoyed in previous matches. Ryan Mendes will be key once again from the center, using his vision to help striker Dailon Livramento with through balls. The Cape Verdean midfield unit will attempt to hold possession more patiently than they did against Spain and Uruguay.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, will once again rely heavily on Salem Al-Dawsari and Musab Al-Juwayr to provide moments of creativity.

The Green Falcons struggled enormously against Spain’s press and their wing-threat. Saud Abdulhamid’s runs from fullback could become particularly important. Two of the group’s (and tournament’s) best breakout goalkeepers also go head to head in Vozinha and Mohammed Al-Owais.

Neither team creates a huge volume of chances from open play, meaning set-piece situations could be crucial, as we saw in the case of Cape Verde’s first goal against Uruguay.

The Qualification Scenarios

With the group now perfectly poised for final day drama, here’s how the scenario looks:

Spain: Avoiding defeat automatically sends Spain through to the knockout rounds. A victory secures top spot in the group. Even in defeat, they would still have a strong chance of advancing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Uruguay: A victory guarantees qualification. If they draw, they would need Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia to also end level to progress automatically in second place.

Cape Verde: A victory over Saudi Arabia and a Uruguay defeat against Spain would send the Blue Sharks into the knockout rounds in one of the greatest stories in World Cup history. Even a draw could keep their hopes alive of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams.

Saudi Arabia: This is a must-win game. The Green Falcons then need Uruguay to beat Spain and would likely require a significant goal-difference swing to advance as one of the best third-placed nations.

Team News and Predictions

Sidney Lopes picked up his 2nd yellow card of the tournament, so he sits this one out for Cape Verde.

There are also concerns regarding Telmo Arcanjo after he went down injured during the match against Uruguay in the bizarre moment when a Uruguayan player initially tried to help him up before running away as Uruguay scored.
