Atlético Madrid vs Manchester United will kick off the second round of fixtures in the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League. Los Rojiblancos have made a spectacular start to the season, sitting second in the La Liga table having already beaten their city rivals in the Madrid Derby. After a summer of uncertainty and behind-the-scenes turmoil, Atleti finally look settled and ready to take the season head-on. Here’s our preview for Atlético Madrid vs Manchester United.

Simeone’s Men Roaring

When you looked at Atlético Madrid at the start of the season, you would think this team would be having all sorts of trouble on the field. Their star signing from a few years ago, Julián Alvarez, had publicly demanded to leave the club and join rivals Barcelona, a saga that ultimately ended with the Argentine staying put. Their longtime captain and club legend Antoine Griezmann departed the club after spending a total of 12 years in Madrid over two spells. Diego Simeone was constantly questioned over his inability to win trophies, with the Copa del Rey slipping away in the final and a semifinal loss in the Champions League. No one knew how the new signings would fit in. But…

The Signings Have Rocked

Lee Kang-in

Being the Griezmann replacement certainly carries a lot of pressure, but the South Korean midfielder has adapted well to life back in Spain.

The former Valencia and Mallorca man was signed from PSG, with whom he won two Champions League titles, and has seamlessly integrated himself into the Atleti midfield. With two goals and one assist so far, he was named Atleti’s Player of the Month for September.

Jonathan David

Atlético Madrid were in the striker market even before the Julian Alvarez saga unraveled. Looking at their star striker’s desire to depart the club, Atleti didn’t waste any time bringing in a player who could fill Alvarez’s role had he left or should he leave soon. The Canadian has scored three goals in the four La Liga matches he has played, while also providing the key assist against Alaves. David is clearly the preferred forward now at the club, with Alexander Sørloth slipping further down the pecking order.

Alex Grimaldo

Atlético Madrid added World Champion Alejandro Grimaldo to their ranks this summer, with the former La Masia defender replacing the outgoing and controversial Matteo Ruggerri. Grimaldo, despite being a left back, has scored three times in seven La Liga games and has been a key part of Atleti’s left side with his relentless work rate up and down the flank.

Cristian Romero

A player tailor-made for a Diego Simeone system, Cuti Romero joined from Spurs and instantly became a leader of the backline. After losing his debut game to Athletic Club 3-0, Romero has started every game since then and has won all four of his games as a starter. Most recently, he headed home a late winner against Alaves to win the match for his club and score his first goal for his new team.

Atlético Madrid vs Manchester United: The Build-Up

Both teams are coming into this fixture in very different form.

Atlético Madrid’s last defeat in all competitions came against an English team when they lost away at Liverpool 2-1 in the first round of the Champions League this season. Since then, they have strung together a run of four successful victories in La Liga, scoring 11 goals and conceding only two. Goals have been coming from everywhere for Atleti, with their defense, midfield, wingers and strikers all scoring in that run. Atleti have stabilized themselves well after those two defeats to Athletic Club and Liverpool and look set to pip Manchester United as well.

For the Red Devils, the season hasn’t been promising so far. They have only secured two victories all season: a 5-2 win over Ipswich in the Premier League and a 4-0 victory over Sabah in their Champions League opener.

Manchester United come into this fixture without a win in their last four games, accumulating only two points in this run. Atleti, as mentioned, have won all four of their last games. The needle is shifting toward Atleti to win this, no matter how we look at it.

Julian Alvarez or Jonathan David? That will be the big question on Simeone’s mind. Alvarez still hasn’t won over the Atleti fans after his disastrous summer saga, so this could be a good chance for redemption. A familiar foe in United could also see him get the nod.
