The Leagues Cup is finally reaching the part where things start to get serious. The perfect records are no longer cute little statistics — they are starting to look like warnings.
That is exactly what is at stake in two of the biggest games closing out the group stage: Austin FC vs. Club América and Cruz Azul vs. Chicago Fire.
All four teams enter the final round unbeaten, each sitting on six points and with a ticket to the knockout stage within reach. For the Liga MX sides, things are relatively comfortable: a win or a draw should be enough to get them through, depending on the results elsewhere and the bonus point decided by penalties.
And yes, there is even more incentive. Finishing near the top of the table could mean avoiding the chaos of a road trip and earning the right to play the quarterfinals at a neutral venue.
Austin FC vs. América
Austin FC vs. América has all the ingredients of an early final at Q2 Stadium.
Guillermo Almada’s side is looking to complete a perfect group stage with a third consecutive victory, and América has looked increasingly comfortable with every game.
The Águilas opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over San Diego FC at the Estadio Azteca before producing the exact same scoreline against the Portland Timbers. The results have been impressive, but the bigger story may be the number of attacking players getting involved.
Brian Rodríguez has scored in both matches, while Isaías Violante has already found the net twice. Óscar Perea has also wasted very little time making himself useful. The Colombian, América’s first signing of the Apertura 2026, scored his first goal for the club against Portland.
Basically, América has been handing out goals like business cards.
More pressure on the hosts
Austin, however, has something América does not: a spotless defensive record. The MLS side also has six points and an impressive +5 goal difference, but the real eye-catcher is that Austin has yet to concede a goal in this year’s tournament.
If América wins in regulation, it reaches nine points and guarantees its place in the quarterfinals. A draw would send the game to a penalty shootout for the extra point. If América wins the shootout, it would finish with eight points; if it loses, it would still leave the field with seven.
For Austin, however, the equation is much less forgiving.
A defeat could leave the Texans watching the knockout stage from home. Columbus Crew and Real Salt Lake have already moved ahead of them in the standings, sitting on eight and seven points respectively. Austin must also keep an eye on the results involving FC Dallas, LAFC and Chicago Fire.
So while América can afford to be a little patient, Austin has considerably less room for philosophical reflection.
They need points. Preferably three.
Cruz Azul vs. Chicago Fire
If Austin vs. América looks like a tactical chess match, Cruz Azul vs. Chicago Fire promises considerably more firepower.
La Máquina also enters the final round with six points after beating Philadelphia Union 1-0 and New York City FC 2-1. The reigning Liga MX champions are chasing a third straight win and, more importantly, another statement that they are not interested in treating the Leagues Cup like a summer vacation. Joel Huiqui has repeatedly emphasized that Cruz Azul is expected to compete for every trophy available, and the Leagues Cup is no exception.
Standing in their way is a Chicago Fire team that has also been perfect.
Chicago defeated Necaxa 2-0 in its opening match before beating Santos Laguna 3-1. And then there is the not-so-small matter of Robert Lewandowski. The Polish superstar arrived from Barcelona this season after an extraordinary spell in Europe that included his legendary years at Bayern Munich. Needless to say, Cruz Azul’s defenders probably would have preferred a slightly less complicated final opponent.
A bit of history
The two clubs have met only once in an official competition, with Cruz Azul winning 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Leagues Cup at a neutral venue.
That gives La Máquina a perfect record against Chicago: one game, one win, two goals scored and zero conceded. It’s not exactly a massive sample size — but Cruz Azul certainly won’t complain about the statistic.
Now, with both teams unbeaten and six points on the board, the rematch carries considerably more weight.
Cruz Azul wants to prove that its Liga MX title was not a one-off and that it belongs among the serious contenders for this trophy. Chicago, meanwhile, has Lewandowski and the home-field advantage.
That should make for an interesting evening.
