There are derbies, and then there is the Clásico Capitalino. Pumas and Club América meet this Saturday at Estadio Olimpico Universitario in a rivalry that rarely needs extra motivation. This time, however, there is plenty more than bragging rights at stake.
América arrive with the chance to take a major step toward finishing the Apertura 2026 regular season at the top of the table. The problem? They are not alone up there. Las Aguilas, Chivas and Cruz Azul are all tied on 29 points, turning every remaining game into a potential tiebreaker in the race for first place.
For Guillermo Almada’s side, winning away from home against their city rivals would be a massive statement. Three points could put America in an excellent position heading into the final matchday and bring them closer to securing the top spot.
Pumas, meanwhile, have a much more urgent problem to solve.
Esteban Solari’s team sit 10th with 20 points and desperately need a victory to keep their playoff hopes on track. Their home record has been far from convincing, with just one win at Estadio Olimpico Universitario throughout the tournament. If they fail to take all three points on Saturday, their chances of reaching the Liguilla could become considerably more complicated.
A defeat would leave Pumas needing to beat Monterrey on the final matchday while also relying on other results to go their way. Not exactly the position a team wants to be in with the playoffs approaching.
América dealing with key injury ahead of the derby
América will be without one of their most important attacking players. Uruguayan winger Brian Rodríguez has suffered a quadriceps injury that is expected to keep him out for two to three weeks.
His absence is a significant blow for Almada, particularly with the regular season approaching its conclusion. Rodríguez is expected to miss América’s final two Apertura 2026 fixtures, although a timely recovery could make him available for the playoffs.
The question now is who steps up in his absence. América still have attacking quality, but losing a player who provides pace, creativity and one-on-one ability is never ideal ahead of a game of this magnitude.
Keylor Navas is Pumas’ biggest question mark
While América have a confirmed absence, Pumas have a much bigger question surrounding their starting goalkeeper.
Keylor Navas, the former Real Madrid goalkeeper and one of the biggest names in the Pumas squad, is reportedly a doubt for Saturday’s derby as he prepares to undergo surgery during the upcoming international break.
The Costa Rican was not included in his national team’s squad for the November international window, with the procedure understood to be part of the reason.
For now, Pumas have not provided a definitive update on his availability. Navas could still feature against America, potentially even as a starter, before taking advantage of the international break to undergo surgery.
His situation will be one of the biggest storylines to monitor before kickoff. Losing a goalkeeper of his experience for the biggest game of the regular season would be a considerable setback for Solari.

América looking for first Clásico victory under Almada
There is another reason why Saturday’s game carries extra significance for the visitors.
América have yet to win a major rivalry match in the Apertura 2026. They lost 4-3 against Cruz Azul and drew 2-2 with Chivas, meaning Almada’s team are still waiting for their first Clásico victory of the campaign.
That makes the trip to CU an opportunity to finally deliver against one of their biggest rivals.
There is also unfinished business between these clubs. Pumas eliminated América in last season’s quarterfinals, adding another layer to an already intense rivalry. A victory on Saturday would give the Aguilas a chance to settle that score while potentially making life extremely difficult for their opponents’ playoff ambitions.
Israel Reyes, one of América’s captains, addressed the importance of the game during Friday’s press conference at the club’s training ground.
The defender made it clear that winning these matches is non-negotiable at América, explaining that players are taught from the moment they arrive at the club that these are the games they must win.
Reyes also stressed that América are not approaching the derby with the intention of eliminating Pumas from playoff contention. Their focus, he insisted, is on taking the club to the highest possible position.
Cruz Azul and Chivas results could shape the title race
Even if América take care of business against Pumas, the battle for first place will not be entirely in their hands.
Cruz Azul, also sitting on 29 points, face Tigres in Monterrey on Saturday, while Chivas travel to León on Sunday. Those results will be crucial in determining how the top of the Apertura table looks heading into the final round.
América know that a victory over Pumas would put them in a strong position, but they will also be keeping an eye on their rivals. With three teams tied at the top, there is very little room for another slip.
Saturday’s Clásico Capitalino therefore offers two very different motivations. America want the three points to strengthen their grip on first place and finally win a rivalry game under Almada. Pumas need them to avoid turning the final matchday into a desperate scramble for survival.
The atmosphere at Estadio Olimpico Universitario should be electric. And with both teams having so much at stake, this is one derby neither side can afford to get wrong.
