For the first time all season, there are some doubts surrounding FC Barcelona. Hansi Flick’s side started the campaign on a rampage, winning their first 11 matches in swashbuckling fashion. That included two Champions League victories by a combined seven goals. However, back to back losses against two of the best teams in the world have cast doubts on Barça’s ability to contend for the Champions League once again this year.
As for Aston Villa, their seemingly annual slow start is well and truly behind them. Unai Emery’s men picked up four big wins in October including a 6-0 thrashing of Fenerbahçe and a 2-1 victory over Manchester City. The Villans have won all three of their Champions League matches thus far and are relishing the opportunity to stay perfect against a footballing giant such as Barcelona.

Depleted Barcelona In Need Of Statement Win
Barcelona have done a great job of beating the teams they’re expected to beat. They’ve been ruthless in front of goal, scoring five or more times in seven of their 12 wins. When it comes to taking care of mediocre opponents, there has been no team better than Barcelona this season. The problem is that those emphatic results have not carried over when they face huge clubs. Barcelona lost 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain and 2-1 at home to Real Madrid, sparking concerns about their quality at the highest level. Now they have a chance to ease those doubts with back to back matches against Aston Villa and Atlético Madrid.
It seems like the story has been the same for the Blaugrana every year under Hansi Flick. They have consistently boasted arguably the best attack in the world, but the defense leaves much to be desired. That has continued this season. Despite their dominance, Barcelona have only kept a clean sheet in four of their 14 matches.
Barça came into the new campaign with very little defensive cover after loaning out much-maligned center back Ronald Araújo to Liverpool. That has come back to bite them as an injury crisis has left Flick with very few options in his back four. Over the weekend, midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Brian Fariñas were forced to play center back and right back respectively. It was a senior debut for Fariñas. More experienced defenders Alejandro Balde and Gerard MartÃn are options against Villa. However, it’s been made clear that Balde is not rated by Flick and MartÃn really struggled against PSG and Real Madrid. Defensive reinforcements have to be a priority in the January transfer window, but for now they must make do with what they have.
Aston Villa Aiming To Maintain Perfect UCL Record
Five clubs have a perfect nine points after the first three Champions League matchweeks. Aston Villa are one of those clubs. Their first win of the season in any competition was a thrilling 3-2 away win at Club Brugge. That was followed by a 6-0 demolition of Fenerbahçe, the Turkish club’s heaviest European defeat in 34 years. Villa then comfortably beat Norwegian champions Viking 3-1 just a week after they earned a point against Bayern Munich. Now they face their biggest challenge yet – a trip to the Spotify Camp Nou to take on Barcelona.
Aston Villa are no stranger to a European run under Unai Emery. In the Spaniard’s first season in charge of the Villans, he navigated them out of a relegation battle and into the European spots in the Premier League. The next season was their first in Europe in 13 years and saw them reach the Conference League semifinals. Villa then qualified for the 2024-25 Champions League and made it all the way to the quarterfinals. They were narrowly knocked out by the eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain 5-4 on aggregate, even winning the home leg. Last season saw Aston Villa win their first trophy of the Emery era as they marched through the Europa League with ease. They finished second in the league phase and won every knockout tie by at least three goals, including a 3-0 win over Freiburg in the final.
This season’s good results for Aston Villa have been thanks to admirable recruitment in the summer transfer window. Big clubs plundered the Villans as Emiliano MartÃnez, Ezri Konsa, Lucas Digne, Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, and Ollie Watkins all said their goodbyes. Many anticipated a step back for Emery’s side after all those losses, but they haven’t lost a step.
World Cup standout Zion Suzuki has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Matteo Ruggeri were a reliable fullback pairing before both got injured. João Gomes and Leon Goretzka have brought experience and solidity to the midfield. Nicolas Jackson keeps scoring goals. Most importantly, Johan Manzambi is a star in the making. Expectations for the Swiss wonderkid were high after a breakout World Cup and he’s lived up to the hype. Manzambi has scored three goals and provided three assists in his last six appearances for Aston Villa. He’ll need another big game if the English side want to pull off a marquee upset this Tuesday.
Match Prediction
As all Barcelona games are, this will be an entertaining shootout. The likes of Lamine Yamal and Raphinha will run circles around Aston Villa’s defense, but Manzambi and Jackson will cause problems to Barça’s makeshift back line. Barcelona will ultimately get the job done but not without a scare from the visiting Villans.
Prediction: FC Barcelona 3-2 Aston Villa
