Inter Miami return to Nu Stadium on Wednesday with a simple mission: get back to winning before a bad night in New Jersey turns into a full-blown problem. Lionel Messi and company host FC Cincinnati in an MLS showdown that could have major implications for the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Miami are coming off a 2-0 defeat against the New York Red Bulls, a result that ended their four-game winning streak and dropped them to third in the standings. Consecutive regular-season losses have not been part of their routine since 2023, and they will be desperate to keep it that way.

The good news? Their attack has been one of the league’s most dangerous, with 73 goals scored this season. The bad news? That firepower went missing in New Jersey, where Miami managed just one shot on target. Even Messi saw his remarkable streak of 14 consecutive games with a goal or assist come to an end. Apparently, even football’s cheat code has the occasional off day.

Now, the Argentine superstar will have a chance to get back on the scoresheet against a familiar opponent. Messi has recorded seven goal contributions across Miami’s last two meetings with Cincinnati, making the Orange and Blue a potentially uncomfortable matchup for a team already trying to find its defensive footing.

Miami have also been particularly productive at home. They have scored in each of their last 15 games at Nu Stadium and have found the net at least twice in six consecutive home matches. Still, their defense has offered little peace of mind, conceding in 12 of their 15 home appearances.

With the regular season approaching its conclusion, every point matters. Miami’s best possible finish is second place in the Eastern Conference, but that position is far from guaranteed. They sit level on points with New England Revolution and have little room for another slip if they want to secure a favorable playoff position.

FC Cincinnati Want to Keep Climbing

Cincinnati arrive in South Florida with momentum on their side after winning back-to-back games against DC United. Their latest 2-0 victory lifted them to eighth in the Eastern Conference, leaving them four points above the playoff cutoff.

Pat Noonan’s team are still fighting to improve their position and potentially climb into seventh place. A win against Miami would be a significant step toward securing a postseason spot and avoiding unnecessary drama during the final stretch of the campaign.

The visitors have plenty of attacking firepower of their own, averaging 2.1 goals per game this season. Evander remains one of their key creative forces, while Tom Barlow has also been finding the net consistently. Their recent results suggest a team capable of making life difficult for Miami, particularly if the hosts give them the space to attack.

Cincinnati’s main concern, however, is what happens at the other end of the pitch. They have conceded in 15 of their 16 away matches this season, a statistic that should give Miami’s forwards plenty of encouragement.

Still, the visitors have reasons to believe. Cincinnati have collected points in three of their last four away meetings with Miami and recorded two clean sheets across their last three trips to South Florida. If their defense can hold up, they have enough attacking quality to turn this into a much closer contest than the standings might suggest.

Both sides also have individual records within reach. Miami need nine goals across their final three regular-season matches to establish a new club record for goals scored in a single domestic campaign, surpassing last season’s total of 81. Cincinnati, meanwhile, need just one more goal to break their own single-season MLS scoring record.

In other words, there should be goals. The only question is whether Miami’s defense will cooperate.
