BMO Stadium is gearing up for a crucial Wednesday night as LAFC host Austin FC. The Black and Gold are at a crossroads after a miserable run of results cost Marc dos Santos his job, leaving Spanish coach Xavier Tamarit in temporary charge. His first outing ended in a 1-1 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps, which at least gave him something to work with. It wasn’t exactly a revolution, but Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a football team that has forgotten how to win.
“For me, the good news is that we now have a game to analyze. We’ll have footage to correct what we don’t want to see and build on the things the team did well,” Tamarit said after his debut.
“I think in the second half, the team got into good positions down the wings. It was difficult because they defended very compactly, and we created chances through crosses. We scored a goal, but we need to improve,” he added.
There is certainly work to do. LAFC have five regular-season games remaining, and the new man in the dugout has little time to turn things around before the playoffs arrive. The good news is that he has attacking weapons at his disposal. The bad news is that having good players and actually getting them to perform consistently are two very different things.
Two teams heading in opposite directions
LAFC head into Wednesday’s clash following their 1-1 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps. They currently sit sixth in the Western Conference with 42 points from 29 games, having recorded 11 wins, nine draws and nine defeats, with 44 goals scored and 31 conceded.
With the regular season entering its final stretch, every point matters. LAFC need to start collecting wins if they want to secure their postseason position without turning the final weeks into an unnecessary exercise in suffering for their supporters.
Austin FC, meanwhile, arrive in Los Angeles after a bruising 4-1 defeat to Nashville SC. They sit 13th in the Western Conference with 31 points from 28 matches, having won seven, drawn 10 and lost 11.
Their playoff hopes are hanging by a thread, and they desperately need points to keep their mathematical chances alive. Travelling to face a wounded LAFC side might look like an opportunity on paper, although Austin will need considerably more than wishful thinking to take anything home.
Xavier Tamarit takes temporary charge
Following Marc dos Santos’ departure, LAFC have turned to Xavier Tamarit as interim head coach. The Spaniard joined the club’s coaching staff earlier this year and brings international experience from European and South American football.
His immediate task is straightforward in theory and considerably more complicated in practice: restore confidence, improve the team’s attacking patterns and get LAFC back to winning ways before the season slips away.
The draw against Vancouver offered a few encouraging signs, particularly in the second half, when LAFC found more space out wide and created opportunities through crosses. However, Tamarit knows that promising passages of play will count for very little if they are not converted into results.
Wednesday’s match will offer another opportunity to assess whether his ideas are beginning to take hold. An interim appointment can sometimes provide a team with a much-needed reset. Other times, it simply gives everyone a new person to answer questions after another disappointing result.
Head-to-head: No goals the last time they met
The most recent meeting between these sides took place on March 21, 2026, at Q2 Stadium, where they played out a goalless draw.
Neither team managed to find a breakthrough that night, and Austin will likely look to frustrate LAFC again with a compact defensive setup. Playing away from home, the Texans could prioritize defensive discipline and attempt to exploit opportunities on the counterattack.
For LAFC, the challenge will be to move the ball quickly, stretch the opposition and make better use of their attacking talent. If they spend another evening crossing into a crowded penalty area without much to show for it, Tamarit may find that his list of things to fix is getting longer rather than shorter.
Players to watch
LAFC will look to Denis Bouanga and South Korean superstar Heung-Min Son to provide the attacking spark. Both have the quality to change a game in a single moment, although even the biggest names need the right service and a functioning system around them.
In midfield, Marco Delgado and Timothy Tillman will be important in controlling possession and maintaining balance, while former France international and World Cup winner Hugo Lloris provides experience and security in goal.
Austin will rely on Christian Ramirez, their leading league goalscorer, and winger Myrto Uzuni to create problems going forward. Goalkeeper Brad Stuver could also have a busy evening if LAFC manage to turn territorial dominance into genuine chances.
The individual talent is there on both sides. The question is whether either team can put together a complete performance when it matters most.
