Erik Lira’s Monaco move in danger; transfer hinges on Balogun finding a new club

Erik Lira’s long-awaited move to European football has suddenly become a race against the clock — and, somewhat ironically, his dream may now depend on whether Monaco can find a buyer for one of its own players.

The Mexican midfielder’s proposed transfer from Cruz Azul to AS Monaco has entered a critical stage and is now facing a very real possibility of collapsing.

There is already an agreement between Cruz Azul and Monaco over a deal worth slightly more than $11.5 million, including both fixed payments and variables. However, journalist César Merlo reported that, at this hour, the chances of the transfer being completed are, quite literally, “low.”

The main issue is Monaco’s need to free up a non-EU foreign-player spot in order to register Lira. And the player the French club is trying to sell is Folarin Balogun.

Although Monaco has received several proposals for the United States international, none have come close to the valuation the club is demanding for his departure.

Balogun is considered one of the important pieces of Monaco’s squad, meaning the French side is unwilling to sell him below market value or significantly lower its financial demands simply to open the door for Lira.

So, in perhaps the most frustrating subplot imaginable, Lira’s European dream is currently tied to the transfer future of another player.

Everton could hold the key

There is, however, a potential solution.

Balogun is reportedly close to becoming a new Everton player, although the move has yet to be officially confirmed.

The Merseyside club has submitted a formal offer for the striker, according to specialists in the transfer market, including Fabrizio Romano. At 25 years old, and with previous experience at Arsenal, Balogun reportedly sees a return to British football very favorably.

The two clubs are now working to adjust the financial details of an operation that already has the player’s approval. Balogun is said to be determined to return to the English football ecosystem.

Everton has reportedly submitted a formal proposal worth close to $21 million to Monaco for the American forward. Balogun has already reached an understanding over personal terms with the Liverpool-based club, but Monaco’s valuation remains considerably higher.

The Principality club reportedly values the striker at around $46 million, as it looks to recover a significant portion of the investment it made when signing him.

So, to summarize: Everton sees $21 million, Monaco sees $46 million, and Erik Lira is somewhere in the middle hoping everyone can agree before the clock strikes midnight.

For now, the final step required to make Lira’s transfer official is for Monaco to free up a non-EU player slot. Once that happens, the Cruz Azul midfielder will be able to sign his contract and officially become a Monaco player.

Time, however, is not exactly on his side.

If the situation is not resolved before 11:59 p.m. local time in France on September 1, Erik Lira’s transfer from Cruz Azul to Monaco will collapse.

Eric Germán Lira Franco is 26 years old and was born in Mexico City. He holds Mexican nationality and primarily plays as a defensive midfielder or central midfielder, operating from the right side.

His previous clubs are Pumas UNAM and Cruz Azul.

According to Transfermarkt’s official records, Lira has made 183 official appearances in Mexico’s top division throughout his club career.

With Pumas UNAM, between 2020 and 2021, he made 59 appearances, scored no goals, recorded one assist and accumulated 4,601 minutes.

With Cruz Azul, between 2022 and 2026, he has made 124 appearances across all competitions, scoring once, providing three assists and playing 9,875 minutes.

In total, the midfielder has accumulated 183 official club appearances at the highest level.

Titles and achievements

With Cruz Azul, Lira has won the 2022 Liga MX Super Cup and the Clausura 2026 Liga MX title.

With the Mexican national team, he won the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Lira did not play in Cruz Azul’s last two matches because the agreement between the player and the club regarding his European transfer was already in place.

That makes the current situation even more painful.

If Lira ultimately fails to complete his move to European football, it could become one of the most heartbreaking failed transfers of his career. The midfielder had already rejected offers from Asian football because his priority was to fulfill his dream of playing in Europe.

His impressive World Cup with Mexico only strengthened that feeling.
