One of the opening round’s marquee matchups sees FC Cincinnati host Pachuca at TQL Stadium, with both clubs looking to make an early statement in a tournament where there is little room for error. We’ll also provide some insights to two other Tuesday matches.

Pachuca, meanwhile, continue to embrace the identity that has made them one of Liga MX’s model clubs: an exciting blend of academy graduates, fearless attacking football, and the occasional reminder that they somehow keep producing talent no matter who leaves. The Tuzos also arrive with recent international experience after facing Real Madrid at the FIFA Club World Cup. Sure, that didn’t end with a trophy, but it’s still better preparation than most clubs can claim.
Beyond the obvious MLS vs. Liga MX storyline, this is a fascinating stylistic clash. Cincinnati will try to dictate the tempo in front of their supporters, while Pachuca will look to punish any space left behind and remind everyone that Mexican clubs still enjoy reminding MLS teams why they’re so confident every July.
Momentum, however, is mixed. Cincinnati head into the tournament fresh off an entertaining 4-2 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes, providing a welcome confidence boost before league play paused.
Pachuca’s form has taken the opposite direction. After opening the Liga MX season with a victory, the Tuzos have suffered back-to-back defeats, including a loss to León. If there’s ever a good time to hit the reset button, an international tournament where everyone starts from scratch isn’t a bad place to do it.
With only three group-stage matches to separate contenders from early flights home, both teams know dropping points now could become an expensive mistake.

The second Ohio matchup features two clubs entering the Leagues Cup with very different trajectories but exactly the same objective: avoid making life unnecessarily complicated after Matchday 1.
Columbus Crew have become one of MLS’s benchmark organizations, playing an attractive, possession-based style that has earned admiration throughout the league. Playing at home only strengthens their case, as few teams enjoy traveling to Columbus knowing they’ll spend long stretches chasing the ball.
Atlas, meanwhile, continue searching for the consistency that once made them Liga MX champions. The glory days of their historic back-to-back titles feel increasingly distant, but tournaments like the Leagues Cup offer an opportunity to rewrite the narrative—or at least delay another round of “what happened to Atlas?” discussions.
Expect a clash of philosophies. Columbus will patiently build attacks and attempt to control possession, while Atlas will likely prioritize defensive organization and quick transitions. It’s the football version of someone bringing a chessboard to a street fight.
The Crew come into this contest after drawing 2-2 with Inter Miami in MLS action. Before that, they defeated FC Cincinnati 2-1, played Burnley to a 1-1 draw in a friendly, and narrowly lost 2-1 to New York City FC. They’ll be without forward Wessam Abou Ali because of injury.
Atlas, coached by Hernán Crespo, arrive after a 2-0 defeat against Monterrey in Liga MX. Despite that setback, Los Zorros had built positive momentum with victories over Santos Laguna and León, while also cruising past Tepatitlán 5-0 in preseason. Jorge RodrÃguez will not be available for the trip.

Pumas begin another international adventure with a visit to Charlotte FC, where they’ll hope their recent domestic momentum carries over into one of the most intriguing opening fixtures of the Leagues Cup.
Charlotte have steadily established themselves as one of MLS’s strongest home teams, backed by one of the league’s most passionate fanbases. Visiting clubs rarely enjoy their trips to North Carolina, and Pumas know they’ll need both composure and personality if they want to leave with three points.
The Mexican side enters the tournament in arguably its best form of the season. Esteban Solari’s squad has found confidence at just the right time, collecting consecutive victories and reminding supporters that perhaps this team really is capable of living up to expectations—for at least another week.
Charlotte, on the other hand, will be eager to bounce back after seeing a four-match unbeaten streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss to the Chicago Fire. Yes, that Chicago Fire, now featuring Robert Lewandowski—because apparently MLS transfer windows have abandoned all sense of moderation.
Tactically, the matchup should be entertaining. Charlotte will rely on pace, direct attacks, and aggressive pressing, while Pumas are expected to enjoy more possession and lean on their experience in international competitions. As recent editions of the Leagues Cup have shown, the gap between MLS and Liga MX continues to shrink, making every mistake significantly more costly.
Pumas also arrive riding the confidence of a dominant 5-1 victory over FC Juárez, a result that has naturally raised expectations heading into the tournament.
