Vozinha is now an overnight superstar.
The Cape Verde goalkeeper produced the performance of his life against reigning European champions Spain in the most shocking result of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far.
On one side stood Spain’s new golden generation. Rodri. Pedri. Pau Cubarsi and more. On the other stood Cape Verde, a nation of just over half a million people, led by a 40-year-old goalkeeper who had never played against opponents of this calibre.

The Origins of Vozinha
Vozinha’s parents wanted to name him Valdano after Argentina player Jorge Valdano, but ended up naming him Josimar José Évora Dias. Born in the port city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente, Vozinha’s path to the World Cup was very difficult. Spanish newspaper El País reported that he grew up largely under the care of his grandparents and learned much of his football on the streets of Mindelo. The nickname “Vozinha” was given to him by his grandparents and became inseparable from his identity, following him from local soccer fields to the international stage.
He did not emerge from the pristine academies like La Masia or Zubieta like his opponents on this fateful night. There were no seamless promotions or glamorous transfers in his career. A season in Moldova. Years in Cyprus. A spell in Slovakia. Countless international matches with Cape Verde. It has been a long road to the World Cup.
By the summer of 2026, he had accumulated more than 90 international caps and spent well over a decade serving as Cape Verde’s keeper. He had already represented the Blue Sharks at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and helped establish the country as one of Africa’s most emerging and one of the most difficult teams to face.
Yet even then, almost nobody outside African soccer circles knew his name.
After 14 years with the national team following his debut in 2012, Vozinha somehow still remained the undisputed No. 1 for Cape Verde’s greatest generation of players.
The Art of the Sweeper-Veteran
Standing at 1.89 meters, Vozinha possesses the physical profile of a traditional goalkeeper. His game, however, has never been defined by athleticism alone. Over the years, he has perfected his positioning, anticipation, leadership, risk-taking, and control.
Years of experience have sharpened his understanding of angles and timing. He rarely looks rushed or wastes any movement. Against stronger opponents like Spain, those qualities become invaluable.
Cape Verde head coach Bubista has spent years constructing a team comfortable defending deep and suffering without the ball. Such systems require a goalkeeper capable of organizing teammates, communicating constantly, and remaining calm when the pressure becomes overwhelming.
Against Spain, Vozinha did far more than simply stop shots.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente sent out his heaviest hitters, and his side completely controlled possession with almost 76% and ultimately attempting a staggering 27 shots. Yet, Vozinha proved to be a wall at the back.
He directed the defensive line, controlled transitions, slowed the game when necessary and also relieved pressure. In the first half, he calmly denied Ferran Torres, neutralizing an absolute sitter. When Mikel Oyarzabal tried to bully his way through the center, Vozinha denied him, acting as the crucial sweeper-keeper to mop up loose through-balls behind his exhausted but heroic central defenders, Roberto “Pico” Lopes and Steven Moreira.
According to post-match statistics, he recorded 65 touches, made 7 saves and completed 10 long passes despite Cape Verde seeing only around 26 percent possession.
