The Champions League Round of 16 is where the serious business starts, after a chaotic final day in the league phase and a dramatic play off round. Spain’s big three, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, have secured their spots in the knockouts as expected. While Barça secured automatic qualification via some final day dramatics, the two Madrid sides had to play the extra play off round, where they bettered their opposition over two legs.
Here is what comes next in the Champions League Round of 16 from a Spanish perspective.
CL Round of 16: FC Barcelona vs Newcastle United
This is a repeat of the opening league phase fixture back in September in which Barça won 2-1 at St. James Park.
Newcastle made easy work of Azerbaijani opponents Qarabağ over two legs in the play offs. Anthony Gordon’s four goal spectacle in the first leg essentially sealed the tie early as it finished 9-3 on aggregate. The debutants in the Champions League Round of 16 have had a mixed European campaign, finishing 12th in the league phase with just four wins. They are however the highest scoring team this season in the competition, largely due to that nine goal rout.
Barcelona had yet another successful league phase under Hansi Flick, who made Barça the only Spanish team to qualify automatically for two seasons in a row. The Catalans finished fifth in the league phase with five wins, sitting comfortably ahead of Chelsea, Sporting Lisbon and Manchester City.
Both Barcelona and Newcastle United are having contrasting league campaigns. Newcastle are adrift mid-table in the Premier League, sitting 12th after winning only two of their last eight league games. Most recently, they were knocked out of the FA Cup last Saturday by Manchester City in the fifth round.
Barcelona are narrowly top of La Liga, just four points ahead of their eternal rivals Real Madrid. They are on a hot streak in the league with four wins in their last five fixtures. They also beat fellow Champions League side Atlético Madrid 3-0 in the Copa Del Rey semi final second leg, but a 4-0 deficit from the first leg was too steep to overturn. As such, Barça are now only fighting for La Liga and the Champions League Round of 16 and beyond.
Match Preview
Comparing form and morale, Barcelona look poised to take the tie, though it will not be easy. Barcelona have two area of weakness. One, they’re not clinical in finishing chance, something Ferran Torres has come under fire for in recent games. Two, Barcelona’s high line risky gameplay could be an avenue for Eddie Howe’s men to exploit. The Blaugrana have conceded 14 goals this season in the Champions League, the highest among the top twelve teams in the table. They have also not kept a clean sheet in their last eleven games in Europe. However, they have kept eight clean sheets in 2026 across all competitions, a record.
Barcelona have also won each of their last five Champions League Round of 16 ties against English clubs, and there is no doubt Hansi Flick will want to keep that streak going.
The Magpies have won their last four home games in a row in Europe and have lost the home leg in only two of their last 32 European ties.
Barça and Newcastle have faced each other five times in their history, with Barcelona winning four and Newcastle winning the inaugural matchup in the 1997 Champions League.
Team News
Barcelona are set to miss Alejandro Balde, Frenkie de Jong, Jules Koundé and Andreas Christensen for both legs due to injury. Gavi has surprisingly been named by Flick to travel with the squad pending medical clearance.
Newcastle will miss Emil Krafth, Lewis Miley, Fabian Schär and midfielder Bruno Guimarães for the first leg.
CL Round of 16: Atlético Madrid vs Tottenham Hotspur
Atlético Madrid are gaining form at just the right time of the season. Having secured a ticket to the Copa Del Rey final after beating Barça 4-3 on aggregate, Los Colchoneros also beat Real Sociedad 3-2 on the weekend. A 7-4 rout of Club Brugge in the UCL Playoff round and a 4-2 win over Espanyol round off an incredible last three weeks for Atlético Madrid.
The less said about Tottenham, the better. Looming close to relegation, the London side find themselves 16th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone. They have yet to win a single game in the league in 2026 and we are already in March. Spurs are without a win in eleven games in the Premier League and have won only two games this year, both in the Champions League league phase against Frankfurt and Dortmund.
Match Preview
Against all expectations, Spurs finished fourth in the UCL league phase with five wins and seventeen points from eight games. That secured them automatic qualification for the Champions League Round of 16 and eased some pressure. But for the second season in a row, a European campaign is the only saving grace for Spurs. New manager Igor Tudor has not yet solved Tottenham’s problems, and Atleti will certainly know how to exploit that.
Atleti, however, have leaked a lot of goals in the Champions League this season. Their fifteen goals conceded are the worst record among the top sixteen teams; a stark contrast from a classic defensive Simeone side. They are on a four game home win streak and will likely try to make Spurs their fifth victim.
Tottenham and Atlético have only faced each other once in their entire history, the 1963 Cup Winners Cup final where Spurs beat them 5-1.
Team News
Wilson Odobert, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Ben Davies, Lucas Bergvall, Mohammed Kudus, Rodrigo Bentancur and Radu Dragusin are all expected to miss the game through injury. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven will return because their suspensions only apply domestically.
Simeone has a significantly better outlook with injuries, with only midfielder Pablo Barrios confirmed as an absentee.
CL Round of 16: Real Madrid vs Manchester City
Here we go again. I am sure no one expected it. No one at all.
The third most repeated fixture in European history sees Real Madrid face Manchester City for the fifth year in a row in the Champions League Round of 16. In fact, they already played each other in the league phase this season, when City won 2-1 at the Bernabéu.
Real Madrid come off the back of a shaky run, having lost two of their last three games in La Liga. In fact, the only game they won in that stretch required a lucky deflection in the 94th minute to secure the three points. The tie against Benfica in the previous round was also complicated, but Vinícius Jr stepped up in the absence of star forward Kylian Mbappé to secure advancement into the Round of 16.
This is the second year in a row where Real Madrid did not secure automatic qualification from the league phase. They looked set to do it, but a late header from Benfica goalkeeper Anatoly Trubin on the final matchday meant they slipped out of the top eight and had to play an extra round.
Match Preview
Manchester City look to be in decent form, but it won’t be good enough to catch Arsenal, who lead the Premier League table by seven points with eight games remaining. The Cityzens are unbeaten in their last eleven games in all competitions and most recently knocked out Newcastle United in the FA Cup fifth round.
In head to head meetings, the two sides have met fifteen times. All is level, each side sharing five victories and five draws. Both teams have also scored 29 goals each across those fifteen games.
Rodrygo, the tie’s second highest goal scorer, will not feature this time due to a season ending injury. The last time these two teams met in the Champions League Round of 16 was in the 2019-20 season, when Manchester City completed a 4-2 aggregate victory.
Team News
In addition to Rodrygo, Kylian Mbappé, Eder Militão, Dani Ceballos, Jude Bellingham and David Alaba are all expected to miss the tie. Eduardo Camavinga is out with a tooth infection but might feature if he recovers in time.
For Manchester City, Erling Haaland is expected to return after being rested for the FA Cup win against Newcastle. Mateo Kovacić and Joško Gvardiol remain out with long term injuries. Winger Jérémy Doku has resumed light training and might feature.
Hooligan Soccer Predictions
Barcelona 3 – 1 Newcastle
